The Municipality of Šestanovac combines a distinctive karst landscape with archaeological and historical sites. In Katuni, named themed trails lead to specific points described for the area; Šestanovac is also a starting point for day trips to nearby destinations.

Karst Landscape Between Biokovo and the Cetina

The municipal area is bounded by Biokovo to the southeast and the canyon of the Cetina River to the south. Fertile fields lie in karst depressions on the left bank of the Cetina; a parallel karst ridge and a plateau complete the landscape. Karst depressions are hollows in a karst landscape, while ridges and plateaus describe other landforms. Together, these features describe both the fields along the riverbank and other distinctive parts of the municipal area.

Themed Trails Through Katuni and to Katuni Brdo

There are two named themed trails to help with planning, and their descriptions highlight different places. The themed trail Crkva UBDM – Vilića Draga – Vilići – Urličići – Gornji Rubići – Katuni – Gornji Balići – Plandišće – Rubići – Katuni – Brdo – Donji Balići – Crkva UBDM passes through Katuni. Another themed trail, Gornji Balići – Juričići – Smilovići – Katuni Brdo, leads to Katuni Brdo. This lets you distinguish between a trail that passes through Katuni and one whose destination is Katuni Brdo. Check conditions on the themed trails before your trip.

Roman Traces and Historic Buildings

On the Vlake plateau in Katuni, the remains of the intersection of two Roman roads have been preserved. Ruts cut into the stone are about 1.4 metres apart. The site is significant for understanding ancient transport infrastructure in the Dalmatian hinterland. The intersection and the ruts thus connect a specific place in Katuni with the broader history of ancient roads.

Another archaeological site is Velika peć Cave. It lies on the northern slope of the Sridnja mountain range, southeast of the village of Grabovac. Mandušića kula is a different kind of historic structure: a fortified stone house from the 15th century in the northern part of the hamlet of Mandušići in Katuni. The cave and the fortified house represent two distinct aspects of local history: an archaeological site in the landscape and a dated building within a hamlet.

Viticulture and Culinary Tradition

The estate of Jozo and Ana Biskupović has more than 8,000 vines of Pinot Gris and Pinot Noir. The estate’s rural tourism facilities in the eco-ethno village on the Kreševo Brdo plateau are visited by groups especially in summer and autumn. If you plan to visit these facilities, check seasonal visitor arrangements in advance.

Spit-roasted lamb is also one of the specifically named culinary traditions of Šestanovac: it is prepared there according to a traditional recipe. Together, viticulture at an estate and the preparation of lamb offer insight into different local themes related to production and cuisine.
