Žeževica brings together historical themes from different eras: prehistoric fortified sites, sacred architecture, and a preserved ensemble of rural buildings. This offers a multifaceted view of local history for your trip planning, spanning everything from early structures to architectural forms of the 18th century.

Archaeological Sites and Historic Routes

Orje in Žeževica is an Eneolithic hillfort; Trbotor in Žeževica is an Iron Age hillfort. The two sites therefore represent distinctly different historical periods. Those especially interested in prehistory can explore Orje and Trbotor as two separate archaeological topics. The history of transport is also part of Žeževica’s historical landscape: the corridor through Žeževica was known as the Route Napoléon and was also called Marmontova cesta. The road has since been modernized.

Church and Rural Architecture

The parish church of St. George the Martyr stands on Orje, a natural rise. It was built from hewn stone in 1754 and consecrated on June 9, 1768. The church is registered as protected cultural property under number Z-5933.

The Bolčić complex in Bolčići, Žeževica, preserves residential and agricultural buildings arranged around an open courtyard. It was built from local stone known as modrac. Unlike the parish church, the focus here is not a single religious building but a rural ensemble. The courtyard layout and building material give the complex its distinctive architectural character.

The Lourdes grotto in Žeževica is set in natural rock. A 2006 account describes a candlelit procession from the parish church on Orje to the grotto.

In the wider destination of Općina Šestanovac

The municipality of Šestanovac is bounded by Biokovo to the southeast and by the canyon of the Cetina River to the south. Its landscape includes fertile fields in karst depressions on the left bank of the Cetina, a parallel karst ridge, and a plateau. The wider landscape ranges from the rock formations of the Cetina Canyon to the peaks of Biokovo and includes various preserved natural habitats.

On the Vlake plateau in Katuni, the site preserves the remains of a junction between two Roman roads. The ruts cut into the stone are about 1.4 meters apart. The site is important for understanding ancient transport infrastructure in the Dalmatian hinterland. Also in Katuni is Mandušića kula: a stone fortified house from the 15th century in the northern part of the hamlet of Mandušići.

Another landmark in the wider destination is the Gornji Balići – Juričići – Smilovići – Katuni Brdo themed trail, which leads to Katuni Brdo. Check trail conditions before your trip. Regional cuisine in the Dalmatian Zagora includes spit-roasted lamb prepared according to a traditional recipe, veal baked under the peka, and homemade bread from a hearth oven.
