Cista Velika is a destination for travelers who want to compare archaeological remains from different periods. The area includes an archaeological park, a necropolis with Stećci and medieval wells, as well as traces of a prehistoric hillfort. The sites represent different themes: religious and secular buildings, burial practices, water supply and fortification. This reveals the historical diversity through specific sites, rather than reducing it to a single period.

Crkvine: Evidence from Several Periods

The Crkvine Archaeological Park includes remains of ancient secular buildings and early Christian and early medieval religious buildings with their associated cemeteries. Its chronological and functional range thus extends from secular buildings to religious complexes. Specific features include an early Christian baptistery and two ancient cisterns. Architecture, burial grounds and water reservoirs offer different cultural and historical perspectives here.

For orientation: Crkvine lies approximately 200 metres south of the parish church of St James, beside the Trilj–Imotski road. This follows the ancient Tilurij–Narona route. Its connection to the old route adds a historic transport link to the architectural and religious evidence.

Crljivica and the Stećci

The Crljivica necropolis contains more than 80 Stećci and seven medieval wells. Stećci are medieval tombstones; together with the wells, they draw attention to both burial culture and water supply. Within the wider destination of Općina Cista Provo, the site of Cista Velika – Velika and Mala Crljivica has been one of Croatia’s two components of the UNESCO World Heritage property “Stećci – Medieval Tombstone Graveyards” since 15 July 2016.

The Crljivica archaeological zone in Cista Velika lies directly beside the main Trilj–Imotski road and extends for approximately 200 metres. Within the wider destination of Općina Cista Provo, the zone also includes the route of the ancient Salona–Tilurij–Nove–Narona road. This means that evidence from the Middle Ages meets a much older road connection at Crljivica.

ZaduĹľbina and Osoje

Within the wider destination of Općina Cista Provo, the Zadužbina site in Cista Velika includes a medieval well and a Stećci necropolis. About ten decorated Stećci remain there; their motifs can be broadly dated to the 15th century. This broad chronological attribution suits a site where tombstones and a well reveal different aspects of medieval life.

The Osoje-Mandarića strana archaeological zone in Cista Velika includes a prehistoric hillfort on Osoje Hill. Its plateau measures approximately 170 × 160 metres. Visible remains of megalithic walls are among the features of the site; an Iron Age date is possible. This evidence adds the theme of prehistoric fortification to the burial sites and wells, without presenting the dating as certain.

Church Architecture in the Wider Destination

Beyond the archaeological sites, the wider destination of Općina Cista Provo also offers a regional connection to 18th-century vernacular architecture. In Dobranje, the old Church of St John the Baptist was built in 1740; in Svib, the old Church of St Anthony of Padua dates from 1747. Both are considered examples of 18th-century vernacular architecture. The construction dates are seven years apart, while their architectural classification is the same. This regional comparison complements Cista Velika’s archaeological themes with two dated churches in other places within Općina Cista Provo.
