Church and parish history, archaeological evidence and the karst landscape give Cista Provo a clear thematic focus.

Church and Parish History in Cista Provo

Cista Provo is home to the parish church of St. Peter the Apostle, built of dressed stone in 1914. St. Peter’s Church is also listed as a sacred heritage site in the area. Another church landmark is the Chapel of St. Mark the Evangelist, built in 1971 on Gradina above the hamlet of Šitumi. The parish of Cista Provo was proclaimed independent on 5 July 1987.

These three dates relate to different developments: the construction of the parish church, the construction of the chapel and the history of the parish. June 29 is also locally associated with St. Peter: the municipality identifies this feast day as Cista Provo Municipality Day. The calendar date, church construction and parish history thus complement one another without repeating the same historical point.

Location and Local Heritage Themes

Cista Provo lies in a karst depression at an elevation of about 260 metres. It is also a road junction where the Brnaze–Trilj–Imotski route connects with the Šestanovac–Aržano route. The elevation describes the topographic setting, while the two routes provide a different point of reference for planning a trip.

Local heritage themes include the hamlet of Madunići. The 2026 municipal spatial plan lists it as a rural heritage area of local significance; subsequent planning instruments may change this designation. The Madunići and Blebići hillfort is listed as a locally significant archaeological site. Thus, alongside churches, rural heritage and archaeology are distinct themes associated with the area.

Heritage in the wider destination of Općina Cista Provo

Looking beyond the town, the wider destination of Općina Cista Provo offers further heritage themes, each associated with a particular place. The Cista Velika – Velika and Mala Crljivica site is one of two Croatian components of the UNESCO World Heritage property “Stećci – Medieval Tombstone Graveyards”; it was inscribed on 15 July 2016. Cista Velika is also home to the Crljivica archaeological zone, located directly beside the main Trilj–Imotski road. It extends for about 200 metres and includes the route of the ancient Salona–Tilurij–Nove–Narona road.

Other archaeological sites in Cista Velika offer different historical perspectives. The Osoje-Mandarića strana zone includes a prehistoric hillfort on Osoje Hill, with a plateau measuring about 170 × 160 metres. The hillfort has visible remains of megalithic walls and may date to the Iron Age. The Crkvine site in Cista Velika includes an early Christian baptistery and two ancient cisterns. The site in Biorine includes a prehistoric tumulus and a medieval stećci burial ground that developed in the 14th and 15th centuries. Together, early fortifications, ancient structures and medieval burial sites represent distinct historical themes.

The churches in Dobranje and Svib also offer a concrete comparison within the wider destination of Općina Cista Provo. The old Church of St. John the Baptist in Dobranje was built in 1740; the old Church of St. Anthony of Padua in Svib followed in 1747. Both are considered examples of 18th-century folk architecture. Their close construction dates make comparing the two churches a distinct way to explore the region’s sacred architecture.
