Sužan combines a rich church history with cycling routes that include the village in their itineraries. The transition between cultivated land and forest is also part of its past. This gives you two specific perspectives to consider when planning your trip: the churches in and above the village, and the cycling routes, with their different details on distance, surface and landscape.

Cycling routes and landscape around Sužan

Cycling route 471, “Along the Dobring area trails,” passes through the Dobrinj area and includes Sužan. It is 50.5 kilometres long and rated difficult. Its route includes asphalt, macadam and single-track sections. This route specifies an overall distance and difficulty rating; the second cycling route, by contrast, focuses mainly on the places along the way and particular landscape views.

“From coast to hills and back” follows the sequence Čižići–Rudine–Sužan–Dobrinj. The approach to Sužan is along asphalt and macadam roads and offers views of Soline Bay and the mainland. Beyond Sužan, the route continues on macadam and single tracks to the Dobrinj town museum. Route details, surfaces and access conditions may change; check this information before setting out.

Churches and local history

The Church of All Saints in Sužan was built in 1514 under the patronage of the Brotherhood of All Saints from Sužan. Masses were held there until 1927. That same year, the village church of Our Lady of Health was built: local residents constructed it after the Church of All Saints had become too small. The new church was built in the centre of Sužan.

Another historical landmark lies in the forest above Sužan. The Church of St John the Baptist is located about 500 metres above the village. It has no roof and is no longer in use, and is considered the oldest church in the Sužan area. Its location and condition distinguish it from the two churches in the village; at the same time, it draws attention to the area’s longer sacred history.

Landscape and the past economy

Sužan lies at the transition between cultivated land and forest areas, which shaped its historical economy. Past rural activities included growing grapes and olives, as well as raising livestock. This information describes the local economy of the past. Along with the cycling routes, whose approach offers views of Soline and the mainland, it provides different perspectives on the landscape: one through the historical use of the land, the other along a specific route.
