Gabonjin is an older settlement in the Dobrinj area, documented since the 14th century. The village lies below Sveti Petar Hill and its church. A prominent cultural theme is the Glagolitic script: it features in the Glagolitic Park, along a short educational trail, and on handcrafted souvenirs. If you are looking for hotels, you can take the character of the village and your interests in culture, hiking, or cycling into account when choosing your stay.

Glagolitic Traces in Gabonjin

The Glagolitic Avenue (Put glagoljaša) is 200 metres long and leads from Gabonjin towards the Church of St Peter. As an educational trail, it is dedicated to the Glagolitic script. This short route provides a clear setting for a culture-themed walk. Those interested in the script will find an explicitly educational way to explore it here.

The Glagolitic Park opened in 2010 at the initiative of the local community to preserve and present the script and its historical era. Its 16 stone sculptures depict important moments in local and national history, as well as figures associated with the Glagolitic tradition. The sculptures thus complement the focus on the script with historical events and figures.

The Etno workshop in Gabonjin also makes small wooden and stone souvenirs decorated with carved Glagolitic letters. The script therefore appears not only as the subject of an educational trail and the park, but also as a decorative motif on keepsakes.

The Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus stands in the village centre and was built in the mid-20th century. Alongside the church on Sveti Petar Hill, it is a second church landmark in Gabonjin, located elsewhere. The information thus distinguishes between a church in the centre and the church associated with the hill.

Hiking and Cycling

A 13.9-kilometre circular hike titled “Tracing the Legends and Abandoned Villages of the Dobrinj Area” reaches Gabonjin’s Glagolitic Script Park. Compared with the 200-metre Glagolitic Avenue, it is a considerably longer route; the two therefore offer different formats for planning a route. The avenue leads towards the Church of St Peter, while the circular hike leads to the park. Check trail conditions and access before setting out on a hike.

A hiking trail near Gabonjin includes a Glagolitic path featuring 37 Glagolitic letters. This number gives a specific indication of the extent of this script motif along the hiking trail.

A road cycling route also passes through Gabonjin: the B-426 “Through the heart of Krk Island.” It is 39.4 kilometres long, described as a route of moderate difficulty, and paved on an existing road. Check the road surface and conditions before riding. Compared with the circular hike, the B-426 differs both in its longer stated distance and in its mode of travel and classification as a road route.
