Žestilac – Hiking, Threshing Floor and MTB
Accommodation in Žestilac
The Dobrinj Discovery Trail passes through the hamlet of Žestilac; a challenging MTB route from Klimno also runs through the village. This brings two different forms of active exploration to the fore: the hiking trail highlights rural and archaeological heritage, while the cycling route is defined by its distance, elevation gain and technically challenging sections. When planning, you can first decide whether your days will focus more on hikes to historical sites and landscape views, or on a demanding MTB ride.
Hiking Trails and Rural Heritage
The Dobrinj Discovery Trail passes a circular threshing floor surrounded by a low stone wall. Historically, it was used not only for threshing grain: villagers also gathered there for meetings, made decisions and celebrated the harvest. The site therefore connects agricultural work with community events and is considered part of the island’s architectural heritage.
A hiking-trail sign points to the remains of a Roman villa rustica dating from the 6th century. The ruins offer a different historical point of interest from the threshing floor. From the site, you can enjoy views of the Crikvenica Riviera, the Vinodol Channel barrier and nearby mountain peaks. The hiking route thus brings rural history, archaeological remains and expansive landscape views together.
A Challenging MTB Route
The MTB route starts in Klimno and runs through the hilly hinterland of Dobrinjština, including Žestilac. It is 27.5 kilometres long, with 673 metres of elevation gain. Along the way, gravel roads, forest paths and technically challenging singletrack alternate. The route is considered challenging; its length, elevation gain and terrain give it a different character from the hiking trails leading to the threshing floor and archaeological site.
If you plan your days around activities, these are two clearly distinct focuses: hiking centres on rural cultural heritage and the surroundings of the villa ruins. For the MTB ride, the stated distance, elevation gain and technical sections are the practical points to bear in mind.
Cultural Heritage Across the Wider Destination of Općina Dobrinj
The wider destination of Općina Dobrinj also offers further cultural points of interest. In Dobrinj, the ecclesiastical museum collection preserves the religious heritage of Dobrinjština. Its pieces include a copy of the 1100 Charter of Dragoslav and a 15th-century Venetian altar frontal embroidered in gold by Katarina Frankopan. The parish church of St Stephen in Dobrinj is one of the oldest parish churches and is mentioned in a Glagolitic charter from 1100.
The Ethnographic Collection in Dobrinj presents life and folk customs on the island of Krk. It can be visited during the summer months; at other times, you need to arrange a visit in advance by telephone with the Municipality of Dobrinj. If you are planning a visit, it is best to confirm the seasonal arrangements beforehand. In summer, exhibitions are also held at the Church Gallery of St Anthony in Dobrinj.
Klimno also has sacred artworks: the altarpiece in the Church of St Clement is a protected cultural monument. The church also contains a protected wooden Renaissance polyptych depicting the Mother of God, the Child and the saints. The cultural context extends beyond individual places: the eastern parts of Krk are considered some of the oldest Croatian settlements and the cradle of Croatian writing and cultural tradition, where Glagolitica developed.
