Gornji Babin Potok is one of the villages in the Plitvice Lakes National Park area where traditional architecture and ways of life can be seen. The village is also part of the park’s protected cultural landscape. For travelers looking for a hotel in Gornji Babin Potok, the landscape, settlement pattern, and cultural traces from different periods together shape the character of the destination.
Cultural Landscape and Village Character
Areas around Gornji Babin Potok are among the best-preserved cultural landscapes in the national park. They include broad grasslands, meadows and pastures, karst fields used for farming, and traditional settlements. The landscape combines open spaces with a rural settlement pattern. Grazing livestock helps preserve the cultural landscape around the village.
The Babin potok stream is also part of the description of the village: it flows slowly through Gornji and Donji Babin Potok, carries little water, and sometimes dries up. The watercourse adds a distinctive, changeable element to the rural cultural landscape of broad grasslands and pastures.
Archaeological and Historical Traces
The archaeological traces point to several sites and different names. Obljaj, in the Gornji Babin Potok–Brezovac area, is a prehistoric hillfort dating to the Early Iron Age. Obljajčić, also in this area, is a prehistoric hillfort from the same period. Vršeljak in Gornji Babin Potok is a prehistoric hillfort settlement. Obljaj is also considered one of several fortifications used to control the roads from Vrela toward Otočac. While Obljaj and Obljajčić share the same dating, Vršeljak is distinguished by its description as a hillfort settlement.
The remains of the medieval Church of St. George are located in Vreline. Čudin Klanac is a distinctive group within Gornji Babin Potok, with traditional farmsteads preserved in a natural setting. The two-story wooden house at Čudin Klanac No. 4 is considered one of the oldest houses in Plitvice Lakes National Park. Here, a group of farmsteads and a single house represent different scales of architectural heritage.
A plaque at the former cooperative building marks a World War II memorial site. The former school building in Gornji Babin Potok is also recognized as cultural heritage. The historical landmarks thus range from prehistoric hillforts and medieval church remains to buildings and memorial sites from more recent times.
