If you’re looking for a hotel in Plitvička Jezera, your travel dates and planned activities can help you get started. The focus is on Plitvice Lakes National Park, its landscape, and the specific hiking and winter activities described here. For planning, the main considerations are the different route lengths, seasonal conditions, and visitor regulations.

Lakes, Waterfalls and Nature

Plitvice Lakes National Park has been Croatia’s first national park since 1949. It has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1979 because of the ongoing tufa barrier formation process that creates its lakes. In total, 16 lakes are connected by waterfalls. The landscape is therefore shaped both by its waterfalls and by the ongoing formation of tufa barriers.

Čorkova Uvala virgin forest covers 84 hectares of beech and fir forest at elevations of 860 to 1,028 metres. Špilja Šupljara is a geomorphological natural monument and the only cave in the park open to visitors. Three chambers are connected by a spacious corridor; the cave is 68 metres long in total. Forest, lake scenery and the cave represent different aspects of nature that you can distinguish when planning your visit.

Hiking and Viewpoints

Hiking trails on the Medveđak ridge lead through old beech forest. Interpretive panels line the trails, which offer panoramic views of parts of the Plitvice Lakes as well as the surrounding mountain and valley landscape. Tomićevo pogledalo is a viewpoint at 684.82 metres above sea level. It opened to visitors in 2024 and offers a panoramic view over five lakes in the national park. It can be reached on foot via Programme K; the ascent takes about 20 minutes.

If you’re planning a longer visit, you can consider Visitor Programme A as a separate option: it covers 3,500 metres and takes 2–3 hours. This is considerably longer than the approximately 20-minute ascent to Tomićevo pogledalo; the duration describes a different offering, not its level of difficulty. Details of Programme A’s route may change depending on operating conditions, so check them before your visit.

The Poučno–rekreativna staza Plitvica runs from Labudovac along Plitvica Stream to Veliki slap, then continues to the P3 boat dock in Kozjačka draga. Access depends on the park’s operating conditions. When planning, consider the route and the time you want to spend visiting together, rather than treating the different trails as equivalent options.

Winter Activities in Mukinje

The ski area is in the village of Mukinje, about 2.5 kilometres from Park Entrance 2. It has a drag lift with a capacity of 400 skiers per hour. The slopes are approximately 400 metres long; tobogganing is also available. The lift and slopes are therefore distinct from the hiking trails and viewpoints, which offer a different focus for your stay.

Winter activities are seasonal, and their availability depends on natural conditions. The ski area’s opening also depends on snow and operating conditions; details about the facilities and their operation may change too. Check current conditions if you’re planning to visit Mukinje.

History and Visits in the Broader Destination of Općina Plitvička Jezera

The visitor house Carska at Velika Poljana above Kozjak is associated with 1861 as the beginning of tourism at Plitvice Lakes. The historic building was later destroyed. Plitvice Lakes National Park is at the centre of the broader destination of Općina Plitvička Jezera. Its forests are home to bears, wolves and many rare bird species.

The national park is open 365 days a year; public opening hours vary by season. Check seasonal opening times before your visit. The Plitvice Train serves internal visitor transport: its 6.5-kilometre route runs between Rapajinka, Velika Poljana and Labudovac. The park has eight electric boats; the longer ride across Lake Kozjak takes 20 minutes. Fleet details may change.

At Kupalište (P1), visitors can rent wooden rowboats. Rowing is permitted only on Lake Kozjak; check rental availability for your travel dates. Themed tours on geology, biology, forestry, the lakes and other topics are offered in coordination with park experts and are subject to park arrangements.

This makes it possible to plan your stay around the activities you actually want to include.
