Rudanovac can be explored through two themes: its settlement and architectural heritage, and its river and wetland landscape. You can encounter both perspectives in Rudanovac, especially in the cultural landscape along the Matica.

Settlement Layout and Historic Buildings

Rudanovac consists of Staro Naselje and Novo Naselje. Building guidelines call for elongated or L-shaped buildings, pitched roofs, wooden verandas, and stone or wood surfaces. These requirements bring together clear building forms and traditional materials. House No. 130 is a traditional house with a stable and bakery. House No. 8 is a wooden single-storey house with outbuildings. Both houses represent different aspects of local architectural heritage: the combination of a dwelling with utility spaces, and wooden construction with additional buildings.

In the old settlement area near Vratnik is a section of the original gravel route of Kordonska cesta. This section includes carved stone road edging. The remains of a mill and a sawmill are also located on the Matica; their walls have collapsed. The houses, street space and mill remains draw attention to different traces of the settlement’s history, though they do not all have the same function or condition.

Smaller details add to this picture. The enclosed Slatka vodica spring bears a date inscription. Beside it stands a willow, regarded as a locally significant individual tree. In Rudanovac, architectural forms, traces of earlier uses and individual elements of the landscape come together.

Cultural Landscape and Wetland Habitats

Rudanovac is part of the cultural landscape along the Matica, also known as the Korenička rijeka. This zone of traditional village settlements and cultural-historical features lies within Plitvice Lakes National Park. As immovable cultural heritage, such a cultural landscape brings together historically characteristic structures and the influence of people and nature. This makes the river landscape a distinct part of the area’s character, alongside its individual houses and architectural traces.

Natural features include the wetlands of Rudanovačke bare, with stands of vegetation along the Rudanovački stream. Rudanovac is also considered a classic locality for the Siberian ligularia (Ligularia sibirica), in an environment shaped by wet meadows and stream banks. These details about plants and habitats add another way of understanding the area to the historical perspective: the landscape is shaped not only by buildings, but also by the combination of water, wet meadows and vegetation.

The Wider Destination Context

Within the wider destination of Općina Plitvička Jezera, Plitvice Lakes National Park is at the centre of the municipality. The park was declared Croatia’s first national park on 8 April 1949. On 26 October 1979, it was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List for the outstanding universal value of its tufa formation process. These dates are part of the national park’s history and provide the wider context for the cultural landscape to which Rudanovac belongs.

Other nature and visitor-related features also relate to the national park as a wider destination: its forests are home to bears, wolves and many rare bird species. The Čorkova Bay Trail is 21 kilometres long. The park is open 365 days a year, while opening hours for the public vary by season. If you are planning a visit to the park, check the hours for your travel dates.

When choosing a hotel in Rudanovac, the area’s local features can help structure your trip planning: the settlement areas, historic houses and Kordonska cesta are of cultural interest, while the Matica and wetlands offer a landscape perspective. The national park context adds to these local themes without replacing them.
