In Brod-Posavina County, you can weigh up culture, birdwatching and routes for hiking or cycling as different reasons for travelling. The options range from Tvrđava Brod and a sculpture gallery to an ornithological reserve and an eco-ethno village with trails and places to eat. For your planning, it helps to set a priority: would you mainly like to discover cultural sites, get a sense of a specific tour’s duration, or combine scenery with a meal stop?

Culture and history

Tvrđava Brod (the fortress) is considered the most significant historic building in Brod-Posavina County. The fortress houses the Tambura Museum and the Ružić Gallery. The Ivan Meštrović Memorial Gallery in Vrpolje offers a different cultural focus: it displays 35 sculptures and reliefs in plaster and bronze. This means two institutions in the fortress can be compared with a clearly defined collection of sculptures and reliefs in Vrpolje. Exhibition arrangements may change. If the current display is important for your visit, check it in advance.

The Franciscan monastery in Cernik also brings together several aspects: it has a Baroque church interior and an exhibition on biblical history featuring an extensive archaeological and palaeontological collection. For specific visit plans, check the visiting arrangements separately. This allows you to consider the monastery as a cultural focus in its own right, alongside the fortress and gallery destinations.

Nature, birdwatching and trails

In the special ornithological reserve of Bara Dvorina, a replica of an Ottoman border watchtower is used for birdwatching. The tower’s historic form meets a nature-watching theme here, giving it a different focus from the cultural institutions. The Strmac excursion area also has an artificial bathing pond.

For hiking, two marked routes can be compared by length and duration. The Strmac–Brezovo polje hiking trail is 7.1 kilometres long and listed as a three-hour route. The circular trail around Lake Petnja is longer, at 18.8 kilometres, and takes five to six hours. These details give you different time budgets to consider when planning your hikes. The county has around 30 classified cycling trails, divided into western, central and eastern areas. This number may change as trails are added or reclassified.

Stara Kapela lies in the heart of the county, in a small hollow between gently rolling hills. The eco-ethno village offers kilometres of walking and cycling trails, with purpose-built rest areas and viewpoints. There are also two traditional restaurants. Scenery, exercise, places to take a break and dining are all different considerations for your planning. Before travelling, check the condition of the facilities and the availability of the restaurants.

Wine and travel planning

Along the road above Brodski Stupnik are small wine cellars where hosts introduce visitors to their wines. If you would like to plan a wine presentation, check the availability of each cellar in advance. Together with the restaurants in Stara Kapela, they offer a distinct culinary aspect alongside the cultural and nature destinations.
