Municipality of Garčin: Grabovac, Gardun and Slavonian culture
Accommodation in Municipality of Garčin
Grabovac is a Marian shrine and also a picnic area in the wooded foothills of the Dilj gora, north of Garčin. The area around the shrine is characterized by forests and meadows. The remains of the medieval Gardun fortress, also known as Castellum Garchyn, lie on a hill above Grabovac. The area offers a variety of experiences: religious heritage, archaeological history and a landscape of forests and meadows.
History and architecture
Gardun, also known as Castellum Garchyn, was first mentioned in 1474. Garčin is also home to an archaeological site containing the remains of the Church of St. Peter, which is protected as a preventive cultural asset. The Church of St. Matthew the Apostle and Evangelist dates from 1796 and is also protected as a cultural asset.
Traditional Slavonian houses, preserved in Garčin with colorful facades and wooden verandas, are also part of the local architecture. In Trnjani, the Catholic Church of St. Mark the Evangelist dates from the 18th century. It is known for its Lenten concerts and religious programs. The area’s cultural heritage thus ranges from archaeological remains and protected churches to traditional residential architecture and religious events.
