Municipality of Sibinj: Petnja Lake, trails and culture
Accommodation in Municipality of Sibinj
The Municipality of Sibinj lies on the southern slopes of Dilj, west of Slavonski Brod. In the north of the municipality begins a largely forested, uninhabited hilly area; its highest point is at 461 metres. This gives a sense of the municipality’s landscape: Sibinj connects its location on Dilj with Petnja Lake and cultural sites in several settlements.
Walking and cycling around Petnja Lake
Petnja Lake is an artificial reservoir with a significant fish population and is suitable for fishing tourism. A path approximately three kilometres long runs around the lake. The route circles the water and includes information boards depicting plants and animals. At Petnja Lake, then, two different interests meet: taking in the landscape along the path and fishing at the reservoir. If you enjoy spending time outdoors, you can make the lake the focus of your plans, without making the circuit itself the municipality’s only activity.
There is also a specific option for cycling travellers: several cycling routes developed by the “Slavonia Bike” project pass through the Municipality of Sibinj. Walking around Petnja Lake or riding one of the cycling routes that cross the municipality—both ways of getting around are part of the local offer, but they remain distinct options.
Churches and history in the settlements
The Church of St John the Baptist stands in Sibinj. It was built in the 18th century and is protected by the Ministry of Culture. The church’s protected inventory includes furnishings in the late Baroque style of the 18th century. Those interested in architectural history will find both a timeframe for the building and a specific reference to the style of its furnishings.
Another protected church building stands in Grgurevići: the Church of St Philip and St James was built in 1821 and is protected as a cultural monument. In Brčino, the Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary was placed under provisional protection on 17 September 2024. This marked the start of the procedure to designate it as cultural heritage. This site adds a dated recent development to the older histories of construction and protection.
The history of Petnja Fortress goes back further: the archaeological site of the medieval fortress was first mentioned in 1258 in a confirmation charter issued by King Béla IV. The outline of its walls is visible in the terrain. In Gornji Andrijevci, meanwhile, the cultural and artistic society KUD Slavonija was founded in 1984. Together, these examples show that Sibinj’s cultural heritage ranges from archaeological traces and historic churches to local cultural societies.
Traditions, events and regional cuisine
Since 2008, KUD Slavonija has organized the gastro-folklore event “Kukuruzijada” in Gornji Andrijevci, on the first Saturday in August each year. Its main speciality is boiled and roasted corn. The date and food give the event a clear seasonal and culinary focus. In Slobodnica, the folkloric event “Uskrsni ponedjeljak” is organized by KUD Šokica, which has existed since 1915.
At Petnja Lake, the traditional “Ribička večer na Petnji” features fiš and spit-roasted carp, which are offered to visitors. Another cultural event in Sibinj is the traditional folklore and cultural “Božićni koncert”, organized by KUD Tomislav in December. These events have different focuses—folklore, seasonal cuisine and a December concert. If you want to plan your trip around a specific date, check the dates of the individual events before making your plans.
Sports routes are also part of local history: the non-competitive “Putevima sibinjskih žrtava” marathon was first held in 2015. Its 21.5-kilometre route runs from Jakačina Mala through Bilice, Grižići and Stari Slatinik to Sibinj. The route’s length and sequence of places offer a different scale from the approximately three-kilometre path around Petnja Lake. This makes it easy to distinguish between a short circuit by the lake and the much longer marathon route when planning.
