Kufstein: Nature Experiences and Fortress
Accommodation in Kufstein
The Kaiser Mountains Nature Reserve lies east of Kufstein and extends from the city directly across a vast mountain range. In Kufstein, nature experiences meet distinctive cultural landmarks: options include various kinds of hiking trails, Kufstein Fortress, Lake Hechtsee and guided tours at the RIEDEL Glass Manufactory. When planning your trip, it helps to first consider whether you would rather spend your time outdoors, exploring history or gaining an insight into glassmaking.
Hiking trails and nature around Kufstein
More than 1,000 kilometres of hiking trails are available in the Kaiser Mountains Nature Experience area. These include alpine trails, leisurely paths, challenging routes and relaxed family hikes. The range therefore caters to different types of paths and levels of difficulty. In addition, free guided experience tours with expert guides are available seasonally. If you would like to include one of these tours in your plans, check the dates for your travel period.
One clearly defined route is the Kufstein Nature Experience Trail. This interactive themed trail has 14 stations and runs from the Duxer Alm mid-station to the Marienkapelle chapel on Duxer Köpfl. Its stations and endpoints set it apart as a themed trail from the diverse hiking options in the Kaiser Mountains.
At Lake Hechtsee, the circular trail runs right along the water and offers views of the Kaiser Mountains. This easy hike is 2.7 kilometres long; both the starting point and the finish are at the Lake Hechtsee car park. Compared with the extensive range of hiking routes, this is a clearly described circular tour with a specified start and endpoint. Its length, difficulty rating and route help you see how it fits with your plans.
Fortress, history and music
Kufstein Fortress links two historical milestones: it was first mentioned in a document in 1205; in 1504, Emperor Maximilian I captured it from the Bavarians. At the fortress museum in the State Prison, you can see a cell block with 13 cells on the fourth floor of the Emperor’s Tower. The State Prison operated during the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy and housed mostly political prisoners. The location, number of cells and former function give this museum area its own historical focus.
The Heroes’ Organ is a musical landmark. It has 4,948 pipes and is played every day at 12 noon. Check the playing time before your trip. If you would like to plan a culinary experience at the fortress, you can book the Burgherrenessen (Lord of the Castle’s Feast) in advance; confirm the offering before booking.
The old town is home to Römerhofgasse, one of Kufstein’s sights. It complements the fortress and its history with another named location in the city. This lets you combine historical themes with a stroll through the old town.
Glass manufactory and other points of interest
Public tours at the RIEDEL Glass Manufactory take place Monday to Friday at 11 am and 1:30 pm; advance booking is not required. On a guided tour through RIEDEL’s production facility, visitors experience handcrafted production and the precision of master glassblowers. Check the times and visitor information before your visit.
The Kufstein Kaiser Lift also offers a specific point for planning your trip: the Brentenjoch mountain station is at an altitude of around 1,256 metres; allow about 30 minutes for a lift ride. Check operating details before your trip.
On a broader scale, the Kufsteinerland region brings together the fortress city of Kufstein and eight surrounding villages. This regional context distinguishes the city from its wider surroundings. Use it to focus your search on the experiences that interest you most in Kufstein.
