Discover Wildschönau
Accommodation in Wildschönau
Explore Wildschönau through a range of themes: short walks, trails with interactive stations, museums showcasing rural life and woodworking, and hikes through a distinctive rocky landscape. To plan your visit, you can first decide whether to focus on walking trails, cultural themes or longer routes.
Walking Trails and a Gorge Hike
The Auenweg in Niederau is an almost flat, one-kilometre walking trail that takes around 30 minutes. There is also a medicinal herb nature trail along the Auenweg in Niederau. Information boards explain the herbs and plants that grow there and their traditional uses. This makes a short walk an opportunity to learn about the plants along the way.
The Wildschönauer Wirbelwindweg runs for four kilometres between Niederau and Oberau and features several interactive stations. For a longer route, try the hike through Kundler Klamm: it starts in the Mühltal district and runs for around 3.5 kilometres through the gorge. The route is accessible with a pushchair. Towering rock walls frame the gorge, rising up to 200 metres high. The Bummelzug train runs from Mühltal to the entrance to the gorge; the journey takes 20 minutes.
The seasonal access period for Kundler Klamm is given as 1 April to 15 November; it is freely accessible during this period. Before your hike, check whether this information applies to your travel dates.
Museums and Woodworking
The z'Bach Mountain Farming Museum features more than 1,200 exhibits on the austere life of Tyrolean mountain farmers. From June to October, a craft market is held there every Thursday. Demonstrations include wood carving, woodturning, felt slipper making, flax spinning, basket weaving and beekeeping. As this is a seasonal programme, it is best to check the dates before your trip.
The 1st Tyrolean Wood Museum displays more than 3,000 exhibits in 59 wooden chambers. A one-kilometre wood-themed trail starts next to the museum. This gives you a choice of both numerous exhibits in wooden chambers and a dedicated trail about wood. Visitors interested in regional ways of life and crafts can also explore these themes through the work on display at the market in z'Bach.
Chapel, Valley Festival and Regional Speciality
The dome frescoes in St Anthony's Chapel depict scenes from the life of St Anthony. The annual Valley Festival traditionally includes a large parade on Sunday, with a different theme each year. As dates and the programme should be checked before your trip, the festival is best treated as an opportunity to plan around the specific event dates rather than a fixed travel date.
A distinctive regional speciality is Krautinger: a schnapps made from white stubble turnips and distilled exclusively in Wildschönau. Drachental Family Park also has an 18-hole adventure golf course. These varied attractions complement the museums and hiking options with regional produce, a festival and a specific leisure activity.
Mountain Lifts and Other Trails
In Wildschönau, the Schatzbergbahn and Markbachjochbahn gondolas take visitors up into the mountains. Operating times and ticket conditions vary by season. The ride on the 8-person gondola to Markbachjoch takes around eight minutes. From the Markbachjochbahn mountain station, it is about a 30-minute walk to the mountain lake with its sculptures; check the seasonal lift operating schedule before planning this walk.
The Schatzberg circular hiking trail offers views of the neighbouring Alpbachtal. Markbachjoch is also a starting point for a range of activities: a section of the Bikeschaukel Tirol runs over it, and the Ski Juwel Alpbachtal Wildschönau ski area has beginner lifts in Oberau and at Roggenboden. This information can help you consider hiking, cycling and skiing as different focuses for your stay, rather than combining them into a single excursion.
