Studenzen offers several specific starting points for planning your trip: cycling routes, hikes, archaeological history and regional craftsmanship.

Cycling Routes and Getting Around

The southern route of the Raab Valley Cycle Path R11 runs from Gleisdorf via St. Margarethen, Studenzen/Fladnitz, Feldbach, Lödersdorf and Fehring to St. Martin an der Raab and Jennersdorf. In this route sequence, Studenzen/Fladnitz lies between St. Margarethen and Feldbach. Another cycling route is the family-friendly Kirchbergvital Cycle Route: after 2.5 km, it meets a pedestrian and cycle path heading towards Studenzen.

For travel by RegioBus, routes 440 and 404 are listed as going to the Siegersdorf Abzw. Graberberg stop. From there, it is about 1.1 km on foot. Check connections before setting out so you can factor the bus journey and the walk that follows into your plans.

Routes from Studenzen-Fladnitz Station

The “Reflections” cultural history trail starts at Studenzen-Fladnitz Station in the Raab Valley. From either the starting or ending point, the trail can be completed on foot or by bicycle in two stages.

The Eichkögl and Fladnitzberg circular hike also starts at the same station. In the vicinity of Studenzen, it passes through meadows and woodland to the parish and pilgrimage church of Klein Mariazell. The “Reflections” trail and this circular hike therefore share a starting point, but differ in the way they are described: one can be completed on foot or by bicycle in two stages, while the other is a circular hike through meadows and woodland to a church.

Behind Studenzen-Fladnitz Station, on Fuchskogel, is Styria’s oldest fortified hilltop settlement, dating from the Early Bronze Age, around 2500 BC. The settlement includes a rampart. The reference to Fuchskogel adds an archaeological perspective on the area’s early settlement history to your route planning.

Local History, Craftsmanship and Distinctive Motifs

One of the six regional information boards stands in Studenzen by the war memorial. The Historical Society erected the boards in 2015 and 2016 to mark the 750th anniversary. The series presents the Josephine land survey of 1784/1785, historic municipal coats of arms and short excerpts from the history of the local districts.

Since 1955, Trachtenmode Hiebaum in Studenzen has stood for quality, regionality and craftsmanship. The Vulkanland traditional costume, the Rosegger costume and the classic Styrian costume are made by hand using high-quality local materials. Visits to the experience centre are possible on an ongoing basis; check the booking details before you arrive.

Sacred motifs also appear in different forms: the village chapel in Studenzen is a Marian chapel. A few steps from a wayside shrine stands a statue of the Virgin Mary depicting the Immaculate Conception, with her feet on a serpent, the moon and the globe. The statue is housed under a glass dome in an unusual glass-and-steel structure.

A Private Garden as a Distinctive Local Feature

Zettl’s country garden is a 6,000 m² private garden in Studenzen, laid out around a 250-year-old country house that was renovated and remodelled in 1995. The garden features described include a bathing pond of about 300 m² with a stream and an associated spring-fed pond. Both ponds have lush plant growth. Zettl’s country garden is a private garden and therefore a distinctive local feature of Studenzen.

The different themes are easy to distinguish when planning your trip: the R11 offers a longer, named sequence of places, while the Kirchbergvital Cycle Route reaches a pedestrian and cycle path towards Studenzen. For culture enthusiasts, the trail, the hike, the Bronze Age settlement and the regional information boards are key highlights; craftsmanship and Marian motifs add further local points of interest.
