Hatzendorf combines cultural themes with trails through varied landscapes. If you’re looking for a hotel for your trip, these highlights can help you choose a destination: art and theatre, insights into history, or walks with views of Hatzendorf and Riegersburg Castle. Each trail has its own focus rather than offering the same kind of experience.

Art, Theatre and History

The parish church in Hatzendorf features a high altar created in 1753 by sculptor Franz Domiscus from Gnas. The work brings art history together with a specific place in Hatzendorf; the artist’s name and the year it was created give it a clear historical context. For your trip planning, it is a cultural point of interest in its own right, alongside the trails and theatre offerings.

Theatre also has a long history in Hatzendorf: the theatre has been running since 24 February 1924. Since 1986, the KinderTheater has given children aged nine to ten the chance to perform with a stage, lighting and a makeup artist. These two details show different sides of local theatre: a theatre tradition and an opportunity for children to take part in a performance themselves. If you’re interested in the performing arts, these themes complement the visual arts.

The Art Panorama Trail brings modern art together with the landscape. Since 2009, 15 modern artworks have lined the trail. It runs along a ridge surrounded by 360-degree panoramas and offers views of Hatzendorf. On this route, outdoor artworks and views of the village sit side by side. This sets the Art Panorama Trail apart from trails whose descriptions focus more on landscapes, bees or streams.

The area’s earlier history is also connected with a specific landscape: archaeological excavations provide evidence of settlement in the climatically favoured Grazbach Valley, on the eastern side of the Riegersburg basalt formation, as early as the Late Hallstatt period. This is historical context for the region, not a single activity like a theatre performance or a trail. For travellers interested in the past as well as the visible artworks, it adds to the picture of Hatzendorf.

Trails through the Landscape and Village

The Beekeepers’ Mile leads across field margins and partly wooded terrain; views of Riegersburg Castle open up repeatedly along the way. The route also focuses on the importance of bees and their role in nature. The Hatzendorf Beekeeping Association and information boards from the Austrian Beekeepers’ Association provide information about this. Both the landscape and the opportunity to learn are part of the experiences described along this route.

There is a specific way to get to the Beekeepers’ Mile: take the train to Hatzendorf station. From there, walk about 300 metres to the trail marker, which starts by the Malerwinkl Hotel Restaurant. The distance is approximate. Before setting out, check the train service and trail marker information so you can plan your journey accordingly.

Honey products are available at the farm shop of the Agricultural College or at Malerwinkl. If you’re planning a detour to buy some, check the opening hours in advance. The Beekeepers’ Mile thus combines information about bees and the landscape with an opportunity to buy honey products.

The Hatzendorf Glücksweg takes a different route through the landscape: it leads through the village centre, through woodland and across meadows along streams. By comparison, the Beekeepers’ Mile passes field margins and partly wooded sections, with recurring views of Riegersburg Castle. On the Art Panorama Trail, meanwhile, the artworks and 360-degree panoramas shape the route.

Festivals and Getting Around

The Essig und Öl Fest takes place in Hatzendorf every two years. If you’d like to plan your trip around the festival, check the exact date before making arrangements. A free cycling and hiking map is available from the Hatzendorf Citizens’ Service Office; check that it is available there before going to collect it.
