Kapfenstein combines a volcanic origin story with architectural and cultural heritage and trails on the Kapfensteiner Kogel. If you are looking for hotels in Kapfenstein, you can plan your stay around geological themes, hiking routes or local history. The following distinctions can help you choose a focus for your trip.

Volcanic Landscape and Geological History

The Kapfenstein volcano formed through numerous eruptions: rising magma came into contact with groundwater, and powerful steam explosions hurled volcanic ash kilometres into the air. The 2-kilometre Kapfenstein Geo-Trail – Path Through the Volcano runs through the volcanic layers of the Kapfenstein volcano.

Geo-Info Kapfenstein is a museum about the geological development of the municipality and the Styrian Volcanic Region. It is based on the regional geology collection of Prof. Dr. Arthur Winkler-Hermaden. It also covers olivine, pyroxene and spinel: around two million years ago, these minerals rose to the Earth's surface from a depth of about 60 kilometres with rising magma and were hurled through the air during explosive eruptions.

Castle, Church and Local History

Kapfenstein Castle stands on the volcanic cone of Kapfenstein. It was built by the Kapfenstein family in the 10th to 11th century as a border fortress against the Magyars. At the castle, geological landscape and a specific story from the Middle Ages come together.

The Catholic parish church of St Nicholas in Kapfenstein lies at the foot of the castle and offers a remarkable view. In the Federal Monuments Office register as of 30 June 2025, the church is listed as a protected monument by regulation; a notice pursuant to Section 3 is recorded there for Kapfenstein Castle.

Trails with Different Focuses

For planning your outings, it is useful to compare the stated route distances: the Geo-Trail is 2 kilometres long. The “Between Fehring and Kapfenstein – In the Footsteps of the Volcanoes” route covers 11.0 kilometres; its duration is given as 2:30 hours, with an elevation difference of 260 metres. This lets you compare the stated distance and time for this route with the shorter Geo-Trail, without assuming a walking time for the Geo-Trail.

The Path of Reflection leads over the Kapfensteiner Kogel; selected spots invite you to experience the diversity of nature and culture. The parish church is also on four hiking trails: the Geo-Trail, the Path of Reflection, the 3-Kogel Trail and the long-distance trail From the Glacier to the Wine. If you choose routes by their themes, you will find both geological and cultural points of interest here.

Ceramics, Horse Riding and Winegrowing

The Ceramics Days take place in Kapfenstein every year in late July or early August. If your trip falls within this period, you can take the event into account when planning. The Kapfenstein Ceramics Circle is committed to preserving and developing ceramic culture.

GestĂĽt Kapfenstein offers guided rides for children with little riding experience; visitors are asked to contact the provider. The offering also includes English riding lessons on well-trained school horses of various breeds. Riding lessons must be requested by telephone.

The Winkler-Hermaden family winery lies on the slope of the Kapfensteiner Kogel and cultivates around 40 hectares of vineyards. Twelve hectares of this area are in Klöch and come from the former estates of the Counts of Stürgkh. Since 2009, the entire area has been farmed organically. The Long Cellar in the winery’s Meierhof is suitable for tastings with groups.
