Wolfsberg: City History and Nature Experiences
Accommodation in Wolfsberg
Wolfsberg’s medieval history can be experienced in two places: parts of the city wall remain at Schlossberg and Rossmarkt. The tower of the late Romanesque St. Markus parish church has a viewing gallery 33 metres above the city. The wall and church tower add distinct accents to the historic cityscape.
City History, Castle and Museum
Wolfsberg Castle also combines a visit with a seasonal cultural programme: contemporary artists exhibit their work there during the summer months. If you are planning a visit, check the exhibition dates for your travel period. This will help you fit the cultural programme into your stay.
At the Museum im Lavanthaus, multimedia and interactive stations provide additional information. Examples include a Lavanttal dialect quiz and a digital flower book. The museum has around 15 themed sections, offering various ways to explore the Lavanttal. If you enjoy alternating between historic buildings and a varied exhibition while travelling, you’ll find two different ways to discover cultural topics here.
Nature, Hiking Trails and Landscapes
For nature lovers, options range from water and forests to scenic trails. The Pomsbach rises in the GroĂźer Kar and plunges 15 metres down in several cascades. The Poms Waterfall is designated a natural monument. The Hebalm includes the natural lake Hebalmsee. On the Koralpe, a circular hiking trail offers panoramic views; it is considered family-friendly and is suitable for easy to moderately difficult hikes.
The water education trail starts at the “St. Gertraud Umkehrschleife” bus stop. The route is 3.2 kilometres long, takes one hour and has a moderate difficulty level. These details on distance, duration and difficulty can help you fit the trail into your day’s plans. As a trail’s condition and maintenance can change, check the current conditions before setting out.
The bee education trail near St. Andrä explores a different aspect of nature. It is 5.5 kilometres long and has eight information boards. There is also an observation beehive at the former Müllerwirt inn in Mühldorf.
Seasonal Activities at Klippitztörl
At Klippitztörl, the summer toboggan run is 1,400 metres long and descends 260 metres. The adventure climbing garden features suspension bridges, a via ferrata, rock and tree elements, and zip lines. Both attractions have seasonal operating schedules, so check in advance whether they will be open during your visit.
Must, Wine and Regional Culture
Must and wine are also part of the region’s character. The Zogglhof houses the Gallery of Must Delicacies and the Fruit Tree Museum under one roof. The international must fair “Mostbarkeiten-Kostbarkeiten” takes place there in May. If you are planning a visit, check the dates for your chosen year.
vinumpaulinum is the wine brand of the Benedictine Abbey of St. Paul. The wines of the St. Paul Abbey estate come from Archduke Johann’s vineyards near Marburg and from favourable sites in the Lavanttal.
Getting There and Choosing a Hotel
Since 12 December 2025, the Koralmbahn has connected Graz to the Lavanttal in around 36 minutes and Vienna in around 3 hours and 5 minutes. Check the timetable for your chosen travel date before setting off. The Lavanttal is accessible via the Süd Autobahn A 2, with exits at Bad St. Leonhard, Wolfsberg Nord, Wolfsberg Süd and St. Andrä.
When choosing a hotel, it helps to decide what you want to focus on during your stay: would you rather explore city history and museums, or plan hikes, nature outings and seasonal activities? Base your search on the places you actually want to visit. When planning your trip, check the transport connection for your travel day and the dates for seasonal activities.
