Reichenfels offers a variety of ways to enjoy a stay filled with hiking, climbing, cycling and cultural sights. The routes vary considerably in length and stated duration; a spring, a viewing pavilion and the parish church each add their own highlights. You can shape your time here around the things that interest you most.

Springs and Walks

The water of the Kölzer Spring emerges along one of the spring trails near Reichenfels. It has a high calcium and iron content and is considered unique in Austria. The spring thus combines a tangible experience of the landscape with a distinctive feature of the water. The six spring trails associated with Reichenfels range from 6 to 24 kilometers in length. They are suitable for leisurely walks, hiking and Nordic walking; some are also suitable for cycling. The right activity therefore also depends on which trail you choose.

At Guckofen, a viewing pavilion invites you to take a short walk, and from there you can look out over the rooftops of Reichenfels. The Guckofen circular trail is listed as approximately 3 kilometers long and taking about 45 minutes. Both figures help you plan for a manageable amount of time. Trail conditions and signage can change, so it is a good idea to check them before setting out on a hike.

Choose Hiking Routes by Time and Distance

For a longer outing, the Ruins Loop and the Höllgraben Hiking Tour are described with different time and distance estimates: the Ruins Loop is approximately 6.5 kilometers and takes about 2 hours, while the Höllgraben Hiking Tour is approximately 8.5 kilometers and takes about 2.5 hours. These figures are estimates, not guaranteed walking times. Compared with the approximately 45 minutes for the Guckofen circular trail, they offer a different time commitment, but no conclusions about difficulty can be drawn from this alone.

Another destination is the Feldalpe, on the western edge of the municipal area. It can be reached from the center of Reichenfels on a hike of approximately 3.5 hours. The actual walking time depends on conditions and your own pace. The walk from the town area to the Reichenfels ruins is listed as taking about one hour. These time estimates help distinguish short walks from longer hikes; use them as approximate guides and take the conditions on the day into account.

Climbing and Cycling

The Offner climbing crag in Höllgraben offers 23 climbing routes with difficulty grades from III to VII. This gives a clearly specified range of routes. The Alpine Club offers climbing courses at the crag by prior arrangement, so advance registration is part of the planning. Climbing is at your own risk.

For cyclists, the Lavantradweg R10 connects Reichenfels in the north with Lavamünd in the south and is part of the cycling network in the Lavant Valley. Unlike the circular trails and hiking routes mentioned above, the R10 links two towns. Temporary conditions may affect its route, so take this into account when planning. Some of the spring trails are also suitable for cycling, while also being intended for walks, hikes and Nordic walking.

Parish Church and Religious Traditions

Romanesque and early Gothic masonry has been preserved in Reichenfels Parish Church. A Baroque work inside the church depicts its patron saint, Saint James the Greater, in the center as a pilgrim. The church thus combines surviving older sections of masonry with a later depiction of its patron saint. For visitors interested in architectural history and religious art as well as the trails, these features offer a distinct cultural theme.

The religious calendar also includes a thanksgiving procession, which is still held annually before Pentecost. It complements the architectural and artistic heritage with a recurring tradition. Together, the church, artwork and procession offer different insights into religious life: preserved architecture, a depiction of Saint James as a pilgrim, and an annual custom.
