Karnataka offers a range of highlights for trip planning: temple architecture in Pattadakal, Badami and Aihole, UNESCO World Heritage in Hampi, the natural landscapes of the Western Ghats, and activities on rivers and in protected areas. When choosing a hotel, it helps to decide first which places and experiences you want to shape your trip.

Temples, Heritage and Traditions

The temple complex at Pattadakal combines North Indian and South Indian architectural styles. It comprises nine Hindu temples and a Jain shrine. The Virupaksha Temple was built there around 740 by Queen Lokamahadevi. In Badami, four shrines are carved into red sandstone; they date from the late 6th century. Aihole offers a different historical perspective: it has more than 125 temples built between the 4th and 12th centuries.

The monuments of Hampi were declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1986. Coracle rides travel along the Tungabhadra through Hampi's protected landscape; operational details may vary, so check the current options before your visit. In Udupi, the Paryaya Festival takes place every two years at the Udupi Sri Krishna Temple. During the festival, responsibility for the temple rituals is transferred between the Ashta Mathas. Devotees view the Krishna idol in this temple through a small window called Kanakana Kindi or Navagraha Kindi.

The collection at the Folklore Museum offers another distinctive focus: located in the Jayalakshmi Vilas Mansion at the University of Mysuru, it displays 6,500 locally made objects from different parts of Karnataka. These include wood sculptures, rural clothing, household vessels, tools and elaborately crafted masks.

Western Ghats, Protected Areas and Waterfalls

The Western Ghats in Karnataka are part of an internationally recognized region of outstanding importance for biodiversity conservation and nature protection. Kudremukh National Park extends across Karnataka's Western Ghats; wildlife safaris are offered in the park. Bandipur Wildlife Sanctuary is also part of the Western Ghats and provides a habitat for tigers, elephants and numerous other animal species.

In Bandipur, the Forest Department offers jeep and minibus safaris. Both depart from the main reception center in Bandipur village. Availability and times may change; check before your visit. Jog Falls is a major attraction in Karnataka and is among India's highest waterfalls. Nature-focused itineraries can therefore include not only wildlife viewing but also waterways as a highlight in their own right.

Rafting, Safaris and Boat Trips

Dandeli's water sports center is located on the Kali River, where visitors can go white-water rafting. The Kali River has Class II to III rapids, suitable for beginners and rafters with an intermediate level of experience. Open jeep safaris are offered at Dandeli Wildlife Sanctuary. At Dubare Elephant Camp, visitors can feed and bathe elephants; operational details may vary. Visitors can take a boat trip on Agastya Lake.

Udupi has its own railway station on the Konkan Railway. Trains connect the city with Bangalore, Mumbai and Mangalore, among other places. If Udupi is part of your trip, check the timetables before departure.
