Mysore District: Palaces, Temples and Museums
Accommodation in Mysore District
Mysuru Palace, also known as Amba Vilas Palace, is a historic palace in the city of Mysore. Built between 1897 and 1912 in the Indo-Saracenic style, the walled complex houses the Residential Museum. Here, palace architecture and museum come together, offering a striking introduction to Mysuru’s history.
Palaces and Stories
A different architectural accent awaits you at Jaganmohan Palace. Mummadi Krishnaraja Wodeyar had it built in 1861 in the traditional Hindu architectural style. Wall paintings depict the royal history and the Mysore royal family’s lineage. Carvings represent the Dashavatara, the ten incarnations of Vishnu. The building’s history and imagery each give this palace a distinct focus.
The Railway Museum combines the history of technology with objects from the royal past. On display is the royal train carriage used by the kings and queens of Mysore; old steam locomotives are also exhibited. Children can take a short ride on a battery-powered miniature train on the museum grounds. This offers younger visitors a hands-on experience in addition to seeing the historic vehicles.
Temples, Monuments and Museums
Chamundeshwari Temple is located on Chamundi Hill, about 3,489 feet above sea level. The hill is also home to temples dedicated to Narayana Swamy and Mahabaleswara. Another striking monument there is the colossal Nandi: it is 16 feet high and 25 feet long at the front. These figures convey the statue’s scale without confusing its dimensions with those of the temples.
St. Philomena’s Church also shapes the city’s architecture, with two twin towers that are 175 feet high. Other museums focus on nature and collections. The Regional Museum of Natural History has “Biological Diversity” and “Life Through the Ages” galleries. The Sand Sculpture Museum displays about 150 sand sculptures on 16 different themes across an area of 13,500 square feet. The approximate number of sculptures and the variety of themes make this museum a different focus for a visit than the palaces and historical collections.
Wildlife and Nature
Mysuru Zoo covers 250 acres; public access began as early as 1920. It is open from 10:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and closed on Tuesdays. As opening hours may change, please check the times before your visit. If you would like to plan your trip around wildlife, you can include the zoo as a separate sightseeing stop.
A short drive from Mysuru, Karanji Lake Nature Park has walking trails, aviaries and birdwatching opportunities. The backwaters of the Kabani Reservoir in Mysuru District offer another natural highlight and are rich in wildlife. Alongside buildings and museums, nature observation and birdlife therefore offer distinct interests to explore.
Local Culture and Traditions
Mysuru is known as the cultural capital of Karnataka. Annual highlights include Mysuru Dasara, celebrated in October. The Mysuru Peta also reflects the region’s history: this traditional indigenous headgear was worn by former kings of Mysuru. Silk is also closely connected to the district: in Karnataka, it is mainly cultivated in Mysuru District.
Devaraja Market is one of Mysuru’s best and oldest markets, dating back to the time of Chamaraja Wodeyar IX. Mysuru Pak is considered a local specialty and can be sampled in Mysuru. Together with the palaces, temples and museums, the market, headgear, silk cultivation and sweet treat reveal different facets of local culture—from historical memory to traditions that remain part of everyday life.
