Bellary can be explored through three very different themes: prehistoric archaeology, temple and fort architecture, and sanctuaries with bears and other wildlife. When planning your visit, it helps to decide whether to focus on attractions in Ballari, the temple complex near Sandur, or traces of nature and culture in the sanctuaries.

Archaeology around Ballari

The Robert Bruce Foote Sangankallu Archaeological Museum is located on the grounds of the Kannada and Culture Complex in Ballari. It comprises two indoor exhibitions and an archaeological landscape. This brings two different forms of presentation together at one site: indoor exhibitions and archaeological terrain.

Sanganakallu, an important prehistoric site in northern Karnataka, lies near Ballari. Its granite outcrops contain stone tools, grinding stones, rock art, burial structures and traces of early settlement. The combination of material finds, rock art and burial structures offers different ways to explore prehistory. The museum and the site each have their own focus: indoor exhibitions and an archaeological landscape at the museum, and traces of early settlement among granite outcrops at the site.

Temples and Fort Architecture

The Kumaraswami Temple is located within the Krauncha Giri complex, about 10 km from Sandur in Bellary district. It dates from the 8th to 10th centuries and is regarded as Murugan’s, also known as Karthikeya’s, first place of residence in South India. It is also one of two protected ancient Hindu temples within the same complex. The neighboring Parvati Temple dates from the 7th to 8th centuries, is the older of the two and is considered more significant architecturally. An unusual example of Hindu temple architecture, it was built in the typical South Indian vimana style during the early Chalukya period.

Bellary Fort comprises an ancient upper and lower fort. The upper fort was built by Hanumappa Nayaka during the Vijayanagara Empire. Visitors can explore the winding rocky paths and climb steps to viewpoints overlooking Bellary and the surrounding area. The fort is therefore notable not only for its history, but also for the paths and steps visitors can walk.

Sanctuaries and Wildlife

In October 1994, the Government of Karnataka declared 5,587.30 hectares of Bilikallu Reserve Forest the Daroji Bear Sanctuary. An estimated 120 sloth bears live in Daroji Sloth Bear Sanctuary. The area is also home to leopards, hyenas, jackals, wild boars, porcupines and pangolins. The sanctuary’s listed daily visiting hours are 2 pm to 6 pm. Check whether these hours are still in effect before your visit.

Gudekote Sloth Bear Sanctuary is located in the Kudligi and Sandur taluks of Ballari district and covers 167.59 km². The sanctuary contains prehistoric sites such as rock paintings, natural caves and old temples; it is also home to more than 130 bird species. Daroji and Gudekote therefore have different focuses: Daroji is notable for its estimated sloth bear population, while Gudekote combines diverse birdlife with archaeological and historical traces.

Getting There and Choosing a Hotel

State and national highways, along with bus services, connect Ballari district; buses link it with major cities in Karnataka and neighboring states. Ballari is also connected by rail to Bangalore, Raichur, Tirupati, Hubli, Guntakal and Vijayawada. Check current timetables for your specific journey.

If you are looking for a hotel in Bellary, it is best to decide first what you want to focus on: the museum and fort, the temple complex near Sandur, or the sanctuaries in the district. Then compare the hotel’s stated location with the places you plan to visit.
