Hampi brings together temples with different religious associations, a stepped granite water tank, and a landscape shaped by the Tungabhadra River, rugged hill ranges, and open plains. If you’re looking for a destination for a hotel stay, you can consider Hampi in terms of specific interests: temples and architectural forms, landscapes, or ways to explore. These aspects give you an idea of what could be at the heart of a stay in Hampi.

Temples and structures

The Virupaksha Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and has been an active place of worship for many centuries. The Vijaya Vittala Temple complex is dedicated to Lord Vittala, a form of Lord Vishnu. These different dedications offer a concrete point of comparison if religious associations matter to your travel plans.

At the Virupaksha Temple, the eastern tower forms the main entrance. Each storey is adorned with depictions of hundreds of Hindu gods and goddesses. The tower thus combines its function as an entrance with imagery that extends across all its storeys.

The stepped water tank offers a different architectural point of reference from the temples. Its terraced shape describes its tiered design, while the rectangular granite blocks indicate its material. The structure originally belonged to the palace complex. This means the tank can be considered in terms of its shape, material, and original affiliation, while the temples are distinguished by their religious dedications.

The landscape around Hampi

The Tungabhadra River, rugged hill ranges, and open plains shape Hampi’s landscape. This combination encompasses the river as well as rugged terrain and wide-open spaces, complementing the study of individual structures with a broader view of the area. When making your choice, the landscape may be just as important as the temples as you weigh your travel interests.

Matanga Parvata is the highest hill range visible east of Therubeedi at the Virupaksha Temple. This specific line of sight connects a named landscape feature with Therubeedi and the Virupaksha Temple.

Exploring the area

The ground in the Hampi Bazaar and Royal Enclosure areas is flat. Shaded paths and information boards make it easier to explore independently; these visitor amenities may change over time. Check current conditions before your visit.

You can explore the historic site on foot through the ruins, and cycling through the ruins is also possible. Visitors can also hike up Hampi’s rocky hills. These options differ in their focus and mode of transport: walking or cycling centers on the ruins, while hiking centers on the hills. This lets you take your interest in structures or landscapes into account when choosing.

The Hampi Buggy Train offers a way to see several important monuments. If you plan to use this option, check before your visit whether rides are available and when.
