Udupi can be explored through its religious traditions, historic cultural sites and coastal life. The Sri Krishna Temple combines an ancient dedication with a founding story dating back to the 13th century; in Manipal, an open-air museum with relocated houses and a traditional shrine reveal another side of the region. In Malpe, the beach, fishing harbour and art along the Sea Walkway take centre stage. You can therefore focus on different aspects: temple history and festivals, heritage in Manipal or experiences on the coast.

Temple Traditions and Festivals in Udupi

The Sri Krishna Temple in Udupi is an ancient temple dedicated to Lord Krishna and is considered an important place for spirituality and culture. Madhvacharya founded the temple in the 13th century. Its dedication and founding story give the site both religious and historical significance.

Two festivals represent different rhythms of temple tradition. The Udupi Pariyaya Festival is celebrated every two years and marks the ceremonial transfer of temple administration between the eight Ashta Mathas. The annual Rathotsava at the Sri Krishna Temple, by contrast, is a chariot festival: a decorated chariot carrying a statue of Lord Krishna is pulled through the streets of Udupi. If you would like to include one of the festivals in your travel plans, check the event dates in advance.

Historic Houses and a Shrine in Manipal

Hasta Shilpa Kala Village in Manipal is an unusual open-air museum featuring Indian heritage, artefacts and culture from a historic period of prosperity. It includes 18 relocated historic houses, almost 80 percent of which have been restored to their original condition. The 13th-century Harihara Mandir is also part of the village. The houses and traditional shrine offer a different historical perspective from the Sri Krishna Temple in Udupi.

Those interested in architecture and heritage will find several points of interest in one place: historic houses, their restoration and a 13th-century temple. The number of houses and the proportion restored also make clear that the village encompasses not just individual artefacts but historic buildings as well.

Coast, Fishing and Art in Malpe

Malpe Beach lies between Malpe’s fishing harbour and the mouth of the Udyavara River. St. Mary’s Island, a group of four small islands, lies about six kilometres off the Malpe coast. If you are planning a ferry trip from Malpe Beach to the islands, check the seasonally varying timetable in advance.

At the Malpe Sea Walkway, maritime and spiritual themes come together in its design: sculptures, murals and sand art reflect Udupi’s maritime and spiritual heritage. An open-air auditorium next to the walkway hosts musical performances and festivals. The programme for individual events may vary; if you are interested in a particular event, it is advisable to check the dates in advance.

Malpe Fishing Harbour serves as a starting point for hundreds of fishing boats that land fresh catches every day. Visitors can watch the catch being unloaded and the boats being prepared. Take care not to obstruct harbour work. This lets you experience the harbour as a place of work without mistaking the fishing industry for a visitor attraction alone.

Gardens and Leisure in Manipal

Manipal End Point is well suited to quiet evenings, picnics or a relaxing walk in nature. Its facilities include landscaped gardens and sports facilities with cricket and football stadiums. The site thus combines the opportunity to spend time among greenery with explicitly named sports facilities. Check the current condition of the facilities before your visit.

A Culinary Connection to Udupi

The local cuisine also has a clear connection to the area: masala dosa originated in the city of Udupi in the state of Karnataka. This origin adds a culinary connection to the city alongside its religious, historical and maritime themes.
