Uttara Kannada has a coastline approximately 140 kilometres long. Here, the Western Ghats meet the Arabian Sea; destinations include beaches, temples, river landscapes and waterfalls. To plan your trip, you can first consider whether you are most interested in coastal trails, religious sites or nature experiences.

Beaches and pilgrimage traditions in Gokarna

Gokarna combines pilgrimage traditions with beaches and coastal walks. The Mahabaleshwar Temple is associated with the Shiva Atmalinga. Om Beach is named for its distinctive shape, which resembles the sacred Om symbol; jet ski rides are also available there. In Gokarna, religious connections and a range of beach activities sit side by side.

The beach trail starts at Kudle Beach and can continue to Paradise Beach or the lighthouse. The one-way distance is listed as four kilometres. You can reach Half Moon Beach via a short climb over the hill; Paradise Beach is accessible by ferry or on foot via a trek. If you plan to take the ferry, check the schedule in advance.

Waterfalls, forests and river landscapes

Magod Falls is on the Bedti River in Yellapur Taluk. From the parking area, a well-maintained path with handrails leads to the viewpoint. Unchalli Falls, also known as Lushington Falls, is also in Uttara Kannada district, in Sirsi Taluk. Lalguli Falls is distinguished by its tiered formation: there, the Kali River plunges down steps between 61 and 91 metres high.

Dandeli Wildlife Sanctuary extends across part of Uttara Kannada’s forests along the Kali River. Visitors can observe animals and birds there, including endangered species; individual sightings are not guaranteed. The Sharavathi Mangrove Boardwalk offers a different nature experience: the paved wooden walkway leads through the mangrove forest and along the Sharavathi River.

Temples, rocky peaks and local arts

Yana has the rocky peaks Bhairaveshwara and Jaganmohini, set amid the evergreen forests of the Western Ghats. A cave temple dedicated to Lord Shiva lies beneath the rocky peaks. The combination of named rocky peaks, forest scenery and a temple offers a different focus from the beaches or waterfalls.

Murdeshwara is known for the Murdeshwar Temple. The town is also home to a 123-foot (37-metre) statue of Shiva. Uttara Kannada’s local art forms include the colourful costumes worn by Yakshagana performers. Together, these places and traditions offer a reason to include religious and cultural themes in your trip planning alongside nature experiences.

When to visit and getting around

October to March is considered a suitable time to visit beaches, explore forests and travel around Uttara Kannada; conditions may vary depending on the activity. For Lalguli Falls, October to December is recommended. Trail conditions there can vary during the monsoon. Comparing these periods helps distinguish the general seasonal guidance for the region from the more specific recommendation for this waterfall.

Buses run from Uttara Kannada to destinations including Mumbai, Pune, Bangalore and Manipal. Check current connections and schedules before making a specific journey. Then consider which of the places mentioned you would like to include in your trip plans.
