Murudeshwara: Temple, Netrani and Sea Activities
Accommodation in Murudeshwara
Murudeshwara combines a striking temple complex with excursions out to sea. When choosing a hotel, it helps to consider whether you primarily want to experience the architecture and the stories associated with the temple, or plan to enjoy sea activities.
Arriving by train
Murudeshwara has a railway station on the Konkan Railway. If you plan to arrive by train, check the timetable for your preferred connection and travel dates. This will help you coordinate your arrival with the actual times.
Temple complex and ancient architectural forms
The temple complex is located at the tip of Kanduka Hill. The Raja Gopuram rises at the entrance: the tower is 20 storeys high and is designed in white and gold. Two lines of sight help put the site in context: the Gopuram is visible from the national highway, while the statue can be seen from the sea. The Bhukailasa Cave Museum is located beneath the Shiva statue. Its walk-through gallery features life-size sculptures depicting the story of Ravana, Ganesha and the Atma Linga.
Nearby, the remains of an old fort are also located near the temple area, though they are not fully intact. Here, different architectural forms meet: the temple complex with its tall entrance tower and the fragmentary remains of an older fortification. From a cultural and historical perspective, the temple, gallery and fort remains offer distinct points of interest.
Netrani Island and the coast
The Netrani Islands, also known as Pigeon Island, lie off the coast. Lush tree cover and curved rock formations define them; numerous pigeons find shelter among the formations. Netrani Island is a short boat ride from Murudeshwara and is known for clear water and diverse marine life. Beginners can also dive on the nearby island with the support of trained instructors. Boat trips and diving opportunities may vary, so it is advisable to check availability for your travel dates. This offers a way to complement a temple-focused trip with a different kind of excursion: the emphasis here is on island nature, water and diving.
Rides at Murudeshwar Beach
Parasailing off Murudeshwar Beach can take you up to 300 feet above the sea. A ride usually lasts five to eight minutes. The maximum height and typical ride duration offer different points of reference: one describes the possible ascent above the sea, while the other gives the usual timeframe for the ride. There are two launch options: a dry launch and an option where you are dipped into the water before ascending. Which option is available may vary depending on the operator and conditions. The boats are operated by licensed local adventure teams. Check the details with the respective operator in advance. Jet ski rides, speedboat rides and banana boat rides are also offered at the beach; their availability with operators may vary.
