Koppal can be explored through several themes: the hilltop fort on the western edge of the city, evidence carved into rock, and the religious significance of Malemalleshwara Hill and Gavimath. The landscape, archaeological traces and religious traditions each represent distinct facets of the destination. When planning your stay, you can focus on what interests you most: natural scenery, historic inscriptions or places shaped by spirituality.

Malemalleshwara Hill: Lake, Rock Art and Temple

Malemalleshwara Hill extends west of Koppal and is of mythological, historical and religious significance. The hill is home to Kamala Sarovara, a natural lake covered with blooming lotus flowers throughout the year. The lake gives the hill a character distinct from its caves and rock drawings or its religious sites.

Traces of a people called the Morera, dating back about 3,000 years, can be found on Malemalleshwara Hill. The cave and rock drawings depict people dancing in a line and holding hands. These depictions give the finds a specific subject: the hill’s themes include not only buildings and religious traditions, but also human figures and movement.

The Malemalleshwara Temple houses the Udbhava Linga, a self-manifested Shiva Linga. The temple’s history is said to date back almost 1,000 years. This age is therefore attributed to tradition and should be distinguished from the traces of the Morera people, which date back approximately 3,000 years.

Rock Inscriptions and Historical Context

The rock known as Palki Gundu bears an Ashoka edict from the 3rd century BC. It is written in Brahmi script and Prakrit. Several inscriptions bearing the names of Jain monks and householders can also be seen on Malemalleshwara Hill. The records thus differ both in the people they mention and in how they are classified: Palki Gundu represents a dated edict, while the other inscriptions record names from the Jain community.

The Gavimath inscription can also be clearly classified: it is located behind Gavimath and belongs to the category of smaller rock edicts, the Minor Rock Edicts. Together with the Persian inscriptions at Koppal Fort, which describe the construction and repair of the fort, it shows how varied Koppal’s written records are. Their subjects range from construction history to archaeological classification.

Koppal Fort and Gavimath

Koppal Fort is a hilltop fort on a standalone hill at the western edge of the city. In addition to its location, its many Persian inscriptions shape its historical character: they describe the construction and repair of the fort. Visitors interested in architecture and history will find a different perspective here than at the rock drawings or religious inscriptions.

Gavimath is one of the region’s most significant Lingayat monasteries. The institution upholds the tradition of Trivida Dasoha through spiritual, social and educational services, as well as meal offerings. The Gavimath Jatre Mahotsava is held annually on the day of Pushya Bahula Bidige. If you wish to plan your trip around this festival, check the specific date in advance.
