Klädesholmen: Herring Culture and Local History
Accommodation in Klädesholmen
Klädesholmen can be explored through its herring history, historic church and seabird watching. When planning a stay, it is also helpful to keep the different dates in mind: Samhällets dag takes place in July, while the birdwatching described here is in autumn and winter. This lets you choose when to travel based on the specific reason bringing you to Klädesholmen.
The Village and Its Church
Klädesholmen consists of two islets. The southern islet is Klädesholmen and has the oldest buildings; the northern islet is Koholmen. This division provides a clear framework for understanding the village. The church and the history of herring processing are other key features.
Klädesholmen Church was built in 1793 on a new church site; its interior was completed in 1797. Its exterior has the character of a late 18th-century wooden church. It has remained essentially unchanged since it was built, with only minor alterations. The period in which it was built and the preservation of its exterior make the church a distinct part of the village’s history.
Herring History and Tastings
Herring canning on Klädesholmen began in the 1920s. The Sillebua Museum presents the history and development of the village, focusing on fish and herring processing from around 1860 to 1960. This period therefore includes decades before herring canning began and extends into the years that followed. This makes it possible to distinguish the start of herring canning from the museum’s broader historical period.
In the centre of Klädesholmen, House of Herrings is a separate visitor attraction dedicated to herring. It offers tasting experiences and tastings. If you want to make a tasting a firm part of your plans, check current visiting options in advance.
At Sillens Hus, herring tastings can be arranged by prior reservation for groups of around 40 people. The offering includes four varieties of herring with sour cream and onions, as well as bread and a drink. A short presentation on the history of herring introduces the tasting. Guided tours can also be booked in advance for groups of ten or more; they can be held in English as well. Advance booking and group size are important to consider if you want to take part in one of these offerings.
Summer Event and Birdwatching
Samhällets dag has been celebrated since 1972 on the first Saturday in July, with numerous activities and a shared herring meal. If you want to plan your trip around this event, check the date in advance.
The best place to watch seabirds is at the far end of Västra hamnen. When westerly winds pick up, gannets, various auks and gulls can be seen there in autumn and winter. The two seasonal highlights are therefore clearly distinct: Samhällets dag takes place in July, while the birdwatching described here depends on conditions in autumn and winter. This distinction can help you choose when to travel, depending on your interests.
Getting There and Practical Information
Klädesholmen is accessible by car or bus. Berths in the guest harbour can be booked through Dockspot. If you plan to reserve a berth, check availability for your preferred dates.
The sauna in Klädesholmen has been adapted for accessibility. If this feature is important to your plans, check the visiting arrangements in advance. Together with the seasonal wildlife, herring-related offerings and July event, this gives you a clear picture of the interests that could shape your stay.
