Stora Dyrön offers several clearly distinct highlights: hiking trails, varied landscapes, geological features, traces of history and swimming spots. For planning your outings, start by looking at the length and route. If you want to spend your time differently, you can also include a local island tour, a museum visit or time by the water.

Hiking Trails and Landscape

The blue hiking trail crosses Stora Dyrön from north to south and is 1.6 kilometres long. The Dyröleden runs for five kilometres around Dyrön and to a narrow ravine between two high rock faces. This gives you a choice between a shorter crossing and a longer loop. If you are choosing between the two, their length and route provide a concrete basis for your decision.

When hiking on Stora Dyrön, sheltered, lush woodland alternates with steep mountains offering views of the sea. Another natural feature lies in the northeast: there are pillow lava formations there, considered unique in Sweden.

Traces of the Past

In the west are the remains of a Stone Age settlement and a Bronze Age burial mound. Stora Dyrön was first settled more than 3,000 years ago. Another historical landmark is 2 September 1743: on that day, two farmers bought Dyrön free from the Crown.

The small Minnenas Bod museum features, among other things, school materials, newspaper clippings, photographs and books about life on Dyrön in the past in its permanent exhibition. The archaeological traces and the exhibition’s varied materials offer different ways to explore the area’s history. If you plan to visit the museum, check the visiting arrangements in advance.

Island Tour, Sauna and Swimming Spots

A local island tour around Dyrön lasts about two hours and can be booked year-round. If you plan to take a tour, confirm that bookings are currently available before your trip. West of Sydhamnen, a sauna along the hiking trail is available to rent; here too, it is advisable to confirm current rental availability.

The Hala swimming spot at Sydhamnen has a small sandy beach, a bathing jetty and a three-metre diving tower. Dyröns badplats has a small sandy beach, bathing jetties and rocks. Access there is partially adapted for accessibility and includes a wide staircase that slopes gently down to the water. Dyröns samhällsförening runs a swimming school at Dyröns badplats; its dates depend on the season and may change. If you have a specific need, check the current condition of the swimming facilities and access routes.
