You can get to know Klövedal through a range of themes: Pilane brings together rocks, valleys, historical traces and contemporary art; Säby is known for circular walks and the historic large farm Säbygården; Villa Solfrid and Klövedal Church add to the area’s cultural history. When choosing a hotel in Klövedal, it helps to consider in advance whether landscape, outdoor activities or individual cultural sites will shape your stay.

Art and landscape in Pilane

The eight-hectare natural and cultural landscape of Pilane is defined by rocks and valleys. There, historical remains dating back thousands of years meet contemporary works of art. This contrast makes Pilane a destination in its own right for anyone who wants to experience landscape and art together. Guided tours lasting around 90 minutes are offered at Pilane and must be booked in advance. A café at the entrance serves pastries, coffee, other drinks and ice cream.

Hiking and cycling near Säby

Säbyleden is a circular hiking trail that starts at Säbygården and passes through open landscapes, pastures and woodland. There are two clearly distinct route options: the six-kilometre route leads to the old stone hut and back. The shorter, four-kilometre route does not include this detour. This lets you choose the length of your walk and decide whether to include the stone hut as a destination.

Along the way, deciduous woodland, wet meadows, seashore, scrubland and grassland alternate. The trail is marked in a subtle orange colour; keep an eye on the markings, as they may change during maintenance. Säbygården, the starting point for the circular route, is a large farm dating from the early 19th century and is one of the best-preserved buildings of its type in Bohuslän.

A cycle path also runs through Säby, connecting Brevik with the Pilane burial ground. It offers a separate way to explore the area by bike; the stated route connects these two places.

Nature reserve and coast

Björshuvudet Nature Reserve includes areas in Björshuvudet, Halsbäck, Klövedal, Önneröd, Kolleröd, Vik and Toröd. Its landscape combines deciduous woodland, pastures, coastal meadows and nutrient-rich fens. To the north, the area is surrounded by the saltwater of Stigfjorden. From the rocky hilltops, you can look out over the archipelago of Stigfjorden.

Ängevikens badplats offers a different view of the coast: the bathing area includes a sandy beach, a lawn and a jetty running along the rocks. The two natural attractions are therefore quite distinct: Björshuvudet is known for its varied landscape and elevated views, while Ängevikens badplats offers a beach, a green space and a jetty along the rocks.

Cultural history in Klövedal

Villa Solfrid is closely associated with the story of Elin Sundberg. At the age of 36, she had the castle-like stone house built on a desolate marsh near her parents’ farm, Rusmut, in Västra Sunna on Tjörn. Guided tours of Villa Solfrid are offered in Klövedal, where you can learn about the gold prospector’s daughter. Check tour availability before your visit.

Klövedal Church also offers a tangible connection to the area’s cultural history: its bridal crown is made of gilded silver. A church service is held there every Sunday. Another archaeological feature is the rock carving in Klövedal. It depicts 13 ships and around 10 cup marks—a manageable number of motifs that can be described precisely.

Klövedal’s attractions range from its artistic and cultural landscape and two hiking routes of different lengths to a nature reserve, bathing area and individual historic sites. When planning your stay, you can focus on the theme that interests you most and plan your days accordingly.
