Sotenäs brings together open rocky landscapes, coastal heaths, swimming spots and cultural sites. You can discover the municipality through a wide range of experiences: explore geological traces of the Ice Age, visit historic buildings or set aside time for a longer activity. Ramsvikslandet, Hållö and the cultural heritage attractions offer particularly vivid examples.

Rocky landscapes and coastal heaths

Ramsvikslandet encompasses extensive rocky areas as well as heathland, wet heath, meadows and deciduous woodland. It also features formations from the Ice Age: whalebacks, potholes, glacial striations and glacial troughs. These landforms bring the area's geological character to life, along with its varied open and vegetated areas. Ramsvikslandet is easy to access and explore on foot; swimming spots include Haby Bay and Tryggö. Access and facilities in the nature reserve may vary seasonally, so check conditions before your visit.

Bua hed is one of Bohuslän's best-preserved coastal heaths. Several swimming beaches lie among the rocky outcrops, and the heights offer sweeping views across the fjord landscape. If you'd like to take in your surroundings as well as swim during your stay, you can enjoy both here, amid a landscape of rocks and open heathland.

Hållö: Swimming and lighthouse history

The pink-tinged granite island of Hållö is a ten-minute boat ride from Smögen. At Marmorbassängen, smooth rock ledges and a bathing ladder lead down to clear, turquoise-blue water. Hållö fyr lighthouse and the lighthouse keeper's house are open daily in summer, from Midsummer to mid-August. Guided tours, exhibitions and information about Hållö, its history, geology, flora and fauna are available on site. Check the specific opening days before your trip.

Wildlife park and mountain bike route

Nordens Ark is located on Åbyfjord and is home to around 60 animal species, including Amur tigers, red pandas, turtles and Nordic livestock breeds. A full circuit covers about 4.5 kilometres and usually takes around three hours if you want to visit all the animals and areas. This makes it possible to plan your visit as a longer activity rather than just a short walk.

MTB route #H4 offers a different way to get around: it is 28 kilometres long, has 456 metres of elevation gain and is rated moderate to difficult. It connects Hunnebostrand and Bovallstrand via challenging trails and small roads, passing salty swimming spots along the way. The park circuit and mountain bike route therefore differ not only in activity, but also in the scope described. As route conditions and access may change, check the latest information before setting out.

Buildings, boats and local experiences

At Gammelgården, you can wander among historic 18th-century buildings and discover objects from earlier times. The building that now houses the museum was built on this site in 1739. Gammelgården also includes one of Sweden's oldest surviving boathouses, partly built from driftwood from shipwrecks. The buildings and boathouse offer different insights into local history: one through its present-day function as a museum, the other through its construction and the materials used.

Cruises on the M/S Soten have been a classic of Sweden's west coast since 1935. The trips feature a West Swedish buffet and entertaining guided tours with facts, stories and anecdotes. Availability is seasonal and depends on the operator; check in advance whether a trip is running on your travel dates.

At Hamnbageriet's café in Kungshamn, you can watch the baking. Baking courses are offered occasionally; check before your trip whether a course is running during your stay. The municipality also offers hiking: coastal trails wind through varied natural landscapes, and one hiking route runs across all of Sotenäs, from Bovallstrand in the north to Kungshamn and Smögen in the south.
