There are several ways to get to know Bovallstrand: through the swimming spots in Bottnafjorden, the town’s architecture and traces of stone masonry, and the surrounding woods and cycling routes. When planning your trip, a useful starting point is to distinguish between a stay by the water, a look at local history and an excursion through the landscape. This lets you focus on the things that are actually most important for your trip.

Swimming Spots and Paddling

The Badholmarna islands in Bottnafjorden near Bovallstrand have small, child-friendly sandy beaches. There are also rocks, trampolines, diving towers, bathing jetties, swimming ladders and a swimming lane. This means several different swimming features are available side by side: sandy beaches, rocky areas and facilities for activities in the water. Facilities may vary by season, so bear this in mind when planning your day at the beach.

Kayaks can be rented from Bovallskajak, north of the town, for exploring Bottnafjorden and the archipelago around Bovallstrand. For trip planning, these offer two different water-based experiences: swimming facilities on the Badholmarna and exploring the fjord and archipelago by kayak. Rental details may change, so check them if you are planning to go paddling.

Architecture, Church and Traces of Stone Masonry

Many authentic buildings from the early 20th century, with distinctive wooden details, have been preserved in Bovallstrand. The town was once known for its stonemasons. Terrace walls, steps, gateposts and veranda columns made of dressed stone reflect this earlier heritage. Wooden details and worked stone offer different points of interest if you are interested in the town’s built history.

Bovallstrand Church stands out for its architecture, interesting altarpieces and unique pipe organ. Construction of the church began in 1916, and the new church was inaugurated in August 1917. These dates place the building in the history of the early 20th century, while the architecture, altarpieces and organ point to other aspects of the church interior.

Every other service in Bovallstrand is celebrated in a style inspired by the ecumenical Taizé Community. It includes meditative, simple songs, Bible readings, prayers, many candles and a period of silence. If a service is relevant to your plans, check the service schedule, as it may change. The history of the town also includes AB Bovallstrands badinrättning, founded in 1908 and 1909.

Woodland and Cycling Routes in the Surrounding Area

The Anneröd-Hogsäm nature reserve, a large, continuous deciduous woodland, is near Bovallstrand. Oak dominates the hillsides, while beech grows in the valleys. A section of the Soteleden trail passes through the reserve. The tree species are therefore distributed differently across the hillsides and valleys; the Soteleden provides another specific point of reference when planning an excursion in the area.

Two cycling routes also offer different experiences. The #NA3 Leisure cycle route leads from Åbyfjorden and Nordens Ark to Bovallstrand. On the #NA1 MTB route, the “Halfway Turnaround” in Bovallstrand offers opportunities for swimming and coffee breaks. The first route describes a connection to Bovallstrand, while the second identifies a specific spot with opportunities to take a break. Route conditions may change, so check them before setting off.

Christmas Market and Hotel Search

A traditional market with lotteries, food and numerous handicrafts is part of the town’s Christmas culture. Check the specific dates and whether the market is taking place before your trip.

Then compare each hotel’s details about location and facilities with your plans. This way, you can tailor your search to the purpose of your trip instead of judging every option by the same expectations.
