Hunnebostrand: Stone-carving tradition and coastal trails
Accommodation in Hunnebostrand
Hunnebostrand is considered an old fishing village, with origins dating back to the 13th century. At the same time, traces of stone quarrying shape the town’s history. If you are planning a hotel stay, you can get to know Hunnebostrand through a range of themes: historic buildings and collections, hiking, outdoor art or the services at the guest harbour. The following topics offer practical starting points for planning your trip.
History and stone quarrying
GammelgĂĄrden is home to historic buildings dating from the 18th century. The building that now houses the GammelgĂĄrden Museum was erected here in 1739. More than 1,000 objects in the museum represent the people of Hunnebostrand and their everyday lives over several centuries. Alongside the history of the building, the focus is also on how people lived.
The Stenhuggerimuseet is dedicated to the working lives of the stonecutters, their techniques and production processes, as well as social conditions and culture. Exhibits include photographs from the era of stone quarrying, tools and an old stone cart. The museum also runs stone-carving courses; check dates and availability separately.
Hiking through history and coastal scenery
The Kuststigen section between Hunnebostrand and Sotekanalen starts at Gammelgården. There is a car park on Lökholmsvägen, as well as the Gamlegården bus stop. Parking and bus stop details may change locally, so it is worth checking them before you travel. The section between Hunnebostrand and Sotekanalen/Ramsvik is also the fourth stage of Soteleden. Its highlights include numerous prehistoric remains and traces of the region’s major stone-quarrying era.
Ramsvikslandet Nature Reserve lies west of Hunnebostrand, nearby, and is also known as the “Kingdom of the Cliffs”. Hiking trails there pass through green coastal meadows and heathland to smooth, pink rock slabs. The two hiking areas offer different experiences: on the section mentioned above, you’ll encounter prehistoric and stone-working remains, while coastal meadows, heathland and rock slabs shape the landscape of Ramsvikslandet.
The Ekoparksleden trail also offers a distinct way to explore the area, with information boards about its nature and culture.
Art, photographs and local history
You can enjoy the works on display at Udden Sculpture Park year-round. This offers a different cultural experience from the stone-carving courses, for which you should check current dates and availability. Another local story links the Stenbryggan bathing spot, also known as Kärringbadet, with the so-called Hitlerstenen: the bathing spot was later carved from this stone. Swimming opportunities and facilities may change; if you plan to swim there, check the current situation before your visit.
Hunnebostrand’s Bildarkiv has more than 18,000 digital photographs that can be searched, from Hunnebostrand, Ulebergshamn and the surrounding area. For opening hours, the archive refers visitors to its own website. The collection offers another perspective on the town and its surroundings—this time through historical and local photographs.
Practical information for your stay
Hunnebostrand’s guest harbour offers showers, toilets, laundry facilities, a sauna, fresh water, electricity and fuel. The services available may change depending on how the harbour is operated. If these facilities are important for your plans, check in advance which services are currently offered.
For your trip planning, you can group the town’s themes together: Gammelgården and the Stenhuggerimuseet represent architectural and stone-quarrying history, while Kuststigen and Ramsvikslandet offer different hiking and landscape experiences. Along with the photographs in the Bildarkiv and the works at Udden Sculpture Park, these provide a selection of cultural and nature-related themes to consider when deciding whether to visit Hunnebostrand.
