Floby: Nature, Trails and Culture
Accommodation in Floby
Discover Floby through three distinct features: the stone walls of Väsmestorp, trails with their own individual routes, and cultural sites such as Floby Church. When planning your trip, it helps to distinguish between a short walk, longer routes and seasonal activities.
Nature and Cultural Landscape
Väsmestorp Nature Reserve lies just north of the village of Floby. The landscape is defined by large, carefully constructed stone walls. The reserve is also home to an old wooden watermill and other historically interesting relics. Here, a striking stone landscape meets tangible traces of history.
Alphems Arboretum is a visitor garden with one of Sweden’s largest collections of trees. Unlike Väsmestorp, which is known for its stone walls and relics, the focus at the arboretum is its collection of trees.
Walks and Trails
From Floby station, an easy walk of about 1 km leads northeast to the nature reserve. You can reach the station by train or bus. It is one of the stations north of Alingsås with hourly train service. As timetables may change, check current connections before travelling.
Flobyrundan is just over 10 km long and passes through a beautiful landscape with various types of nature. Vilskeleden follows paths and roads through cultural landscapes and forests, as well as through a few blocks of houses in Floby. The trails therefore differ in the features described: Flobyrundan stands out for its length and variety of natural environments, while Vilskeleden also includes stretches through forest and built-up areas.
Ljusningshögen in Floby is one of the attractions along Vilskeleden. Within Floby, the trail is marked by the Brynolf symbol and an orange line on the lampposts. Flobyrundan and Gullåkraleden are also marked with trail signs and information boards. The Varaslätten route, on the other hand, has only a digital cycling map; it is not marked on the ground.
Another seasonal option is the illuminated running track at Torrevalla: in winter, it is groomed for cross-country skiing, depending on snow conditions. The season therefore makes a practical difference to this activity, while the descriptions of Flobyrundan and Vilskeleden highlight their respective trail features.
Church and Other Places to Visit
Floby Church was built in 1844–1845 on the site of an older church. The tower chamber, which has windows, was added later and built in 1877–1878. It is said to offer far-reaching views. The church thus reflects several stages in its construction history.
Other places can also be described with specific details. Flobybadet is accessible by car and public transport. The playground on Ledsgårdsvägen has a picnic table. Floby Antikvariat has at least 40,000 books available; as the stock may change, check availability in advance if you are looking for a particular title.
