Kättilstorp: Railway History and Yllestad Church
Accommodation in Kättilstorp
Kättilstorp’s history can be viewed through two distinct historical reference points: its development around the railway station and the construction of Yllestad Church. Other aspects that shape travel planning include individual cultural topics, events and practical landmarks.
Local History Between the Railway Station and the Church
Kättilstorp grew around a railway station that opened to traffic in 1878. Yllestad Church is located in Kättilstorp, south of Falköping. It was built between 1843 and 1848 in what is known as the Neoclassical style. The railway station and the church thus represent different historical reference points: the station’s opening is connected to the development of the town, while the dates for the church mark a specific construction period. If you include historical themes in your travel plans, you can consider the local history and the church’s construction as two distinct aspects.
Peat Processing and the Peat Railway
In 2012, the County Administrative Board designated Ryttarens Peat Litter Factory and two kilometres of its peat railway as a listed building. The factory retained its turn-of-the-century character throughout the 20th century. Two of the original three presses have survived to this day. The designation therefore covers not only the factory but also a clearly specified section of the peat railway; the number of surviving presses also gives a concrete indication of the machinery that remains.
Visitors can ride Ryttaren’s peat railway to the former peat extraction areas on the bog. Peat extraction in the past created a cultural landscape on Ryttaren’s peat bog that offers a highly rewarding experience. This theme brings together both the railway’s technological history and the landscape shaped by peat extraction. Groups, school classes and coach groups can book guided tours at Ryttarens Peat Litter Factory.
