Broddetorp lies right next to Lake Hornborgasjön. Nature watching, walks and cultural history are key considerations when planning a trip. The lake is a bird lake all year round; there are also walking trails, a themed exhibition, archaeological traces and cultural offerings from active artists and craftspeople. You can choose the area based on which of these themes you want to give particular weight to during your stay.

By Lake Hornborgasjön: birdlife and Naturum

There are two visitor centres by Lake Hornborgasjön. Naturum Hornborgasjön is on the eastern shore and close to Broddetorp. Its exhibition covers the area's nature, geology, history and birdlife. Naturum has a birdwatching tower with a lift and is also a visitor destination along Kulturväg Skaraborg. This brings several themes together at one named destination if you are interested in geology and history as well as birdlife.

The Hornborgasjön nature reserve in the surrounding area covers approximately 4,000 hectares and is a Natura 2000 site. Lake Hornborgasjön itself is described as a bird lake all year round. This gives your trip a clear focus on nature, whether you want to concentrate on birds or include other aspects of the landscape.

Landscape and traces of earlier land use

Gullängen is a small-scale mosaic landscape. Its features include open grassland, nutrient-rich mires and pasture, as well as old oaks, hazel groves, deciduous forests and swamp forests. The landscape is therefore not limited to a single type: open areas and various woodland and wetland habitats are all part of the described environment.

The southern part of the Gullängen nature reserve has numerous archaeological remains, including burial grounds and prehistoric fields. For those interested in cultural history, these specific traces offer a different way to experience the landscape than the birdlife and nature themes of Lake Hornborgasjön. Broddetorp is also an old cultural and agricultural landscape with numerous prehistoric remains and opportunities for experiences.

Walking trails and seasonal activities

Broddetorp has several walking trails surrounded by rich birdlife and lush vegetation. The 3.5-kilometre Bolumsleden trail passes through the old cultural landscape on the eastern side of Lake Hornborgasjön and starts at the Naturum Hornborgasjön car park. The Faledreven walking trail runs through the Ruskela källa nature reserve. The named trails therefore differ in their stated landscape settings and, in the case of Bolumsleden, in having a specific route length.

Organised walks for the public are offered around Naturum from April to September. If you plan to join one, check the specific date. This distinguishes the seasonal period from planning a particular outing.

Cafés and culture in Broddetorp

Café Doppingen is next to Naturum at Fågeludden by Lake Hornborgasjön and offers fika and lunch in a natural setting. In Broddetorp, the café at Löfwings Ateljé & Krog serves homemade cakes and filled rolls. The offerings therefore vary, from fika and lunch to cakes and filled rolls.

Broddetorp's cultural offerings include active artists and craftspeople. For trip planning, this adds a contemporary cultural aspect to the prehistoric traces at Gullängen and the old cultural and agricultural landscape. Falbygdsresor also offers bookable culinary trips that combine good food with information about the region's history, nature and culture. This lets you distinguish between local café offerings and a culinary trip focused on regional themes.
