Bollebygd: Cultural History and Trails Through Nature
Accommodation in Bollebygd
Historic buildings, marked trails, and natural areas give Bollebygd its many facets. You can explore the area’s history, plan a walk or bike ride, or focus on observing nature. Options include a loop that you can join or leave at various points, and marked hiking trails of different lengths.
History and Townscape
Tingshuset was built in the mid-17th century and used as a courthouse until the 20th century. Bollebygd Church has a well-preserved exterior typical of the plain neoclassical style of the first half of the 19th century. Inside, the church preserves a medieval baptismal font, probably dating from before the mid-13th century. A 15th-century triumphal cross bears a figure of Jesus from the earlier medieval church.
Bollebygd’s oldest center lies where the valleys meet and includes the church and vicarage. Odinslund was a doctor’s villa dating from the mid-19th century, later became a cultural center, and today houses the library. The library is also home to Galleri Odinslund, at Odens väg 16, which is run by the Bollebygd Cultural Association.
Bollebygd Hembygdsgård preserves buildings and objects from the area’s history, including a barn, a single-blade saw, a forge, and a bell tower. In the bakehouse, bread is made in a wood-fired oven using old recipes. Kulturstråket offers another way to explore the cultural scene: this cultural route through central Bollebygd brings together movement, history, and points of interest.
For help finding your way around, the municipal tourist information desk is located at the reception of the town hall on the square in central Bollebygd.
Trails and Nature Experiences
The Vägen till hälsa loop around Erikstorp in Bollebygd can be used for walking, cycling, or running. An information board with a map stands at Gästgivartorget. If you’re on foot, you can start or leave the loop at any point, so you’re not limited to a single starting point.
In Gesebol, near Bollebygd, there are seven clearly marked hiking trails. They range from 1.9 to 11.2 kilometers and pass through forests and farmland, as well as small forest lakes. In Töllsjö, three clearly marked hiking trails of different lengths also start at the local Hembygdsgården. The information about their lengths differs: Gesebol has a specific range, while the trails in Töllsjö are described as varying in length.
The Sjuhäradsleden runs between Hindås and Mullsjö, is 14 Swedish miles long, and is divided into stages. Stage 2 and parts of stages 1 and 3 pass through Bollebygd Municipality. One stage starts one kilometer north of Olsfors. There is parking and information at Omegastugan; the nearest bus stop is Olsfors, 1.5 kilometers away.
Bäckravinen is a place for walks, exercise, and nature experiences. It offers opportunities to watch birds and experience the changing seasons. Rävaberget is used for walks, play, and exploration. In summer, grazing sheep help keep the landscape open and promote biodiversity.
At Hulta damm, there are places to sit and enjoy fika beside the rapids. Several lakes in the Bollebygd area have attractive, child-friendly swimming spots. The Sjögaredsgrottorna, also known as Töllsjögrottorna, form one of the longest cave systems in Västsverige. Between large boulders are child-friendly nooks and passages several hundred meters long; check the physical conditions on site before visiting.
In Olsfors, BuaSkogen is an adventure and high ropes course in a natural forest setting. If you’re considering a visit, check in advance whether participation is possible and what conditions apply.
Local Baking Traditions
For a culinary highlight, visit Vedugnsbageriet Brobacken near Bollebygd. It has a farm shop, serves fika, and offers baked goods from a wood-fired oven made with locally produced ingredients. Alongside the bread from the bakehouse at Bollebygd HembygdsgĂĄrd, it shows baking in two different contexts: as part of preserved local history and as an offering made with local ingredients.
