Discover Skövde: Hiking Trails, City History and Culture
Accommodation in Skövde
Visitors to Skövde can include hiking trails on Billingen, green spaces and cultural attractions in their travel plans. The routes vary in length and scenery: some pass through forests and meadows, while others combine nature with traces of past industries. The city’s museums, churches and cultural centre offer other points of interest.
Hiking on Billingen: Circular Trails and Stages
The 57-kilometre Billingeleden hiking trail runs around Billingen along the mountainside. The route passes grazing land, forests on the slopes and a limestone plateau. It is divided into eight stages. Information boards with maps stand at the beginning and end of each stage, and parking is available nearby. This makes it possible to plan with both the full distance and individual stages in mind.
A shorter circular hike is Bergaklivet, at 19 kilometres. The route passes through flower-filled meadows, lush wild garlic forests and gently rolling green hills. You can reach Bergaklivet by taking bus route 613 to the Karlsfors stop. Check the latest public transport information before travelling.
The four-kilometre Karlsforsrundan passes through the Silverfallet-Karlsfors and Melldala nature reserves and by Silverfallet. Along the way are remains of historic alum shale and limestone mining, including red ochre spoil heaps and lime kilns. Nature and industrial history are both part of the scenery here. For a choice of distances, Trollstigen has three circular route options: 2.6, 8.1 or 12.4 kilometres. They all start and finish at the viewpoint on Billingen. From Skövde Resecentrum, Trollstigen can be reached by bus routes 8 or 9; here too, it is a good idea to check the timetables before setting off.
Museums and Churches in Skövde
In the city centre, Skövde Kulturhus houses, among other things, a theatre, cinema, library and art facilities. It is considered Sweden’s first cultural centre. Konstmuseet presents permanent and temporary art exhibitions throughout the year; around two-thirds of the works in its collection were created by women. At Skövde stadsmuseum, a permanent exhibition tells the story of the city’s development over the past 600 years. The museum is housed in a former textile factory in Norrmalm and explores history through objects, texts and photographs. The open storage area displays thousands of objects from the Skövde area, including Stone Age boats. Admission to Skövde Kulturfabrik and the stadsmuseum exhibitions is free.
Church visits also offer different historical perspectives. Våmbs kyrka was built in the mid-12th century and is one of Sweden’s best-known Romanesque churches. Inside are several medieval wooden sculptures and a 13th-century baptismal font that is still in use. The church is open during the day in summer; visits can be booked at other times. S:ta Helena Kyrka stands on medieval foundations. The present building was constructed in the late 18th century, after the great city fire of 1759. An iron grille from the 15th century and a glass panel in the floor offer a glimpse into the building’s history: through the panel, you can see the stairs leading to a crypt vault traditionally associated with Saint Elin.
Green Spaces and Seasonal Sights
Boulognerskogen is Skövde’s largest park. Its landscapes and facilities include a beech forest, tall pine forest, a playground and a swimming lake. Garpaparken has a bird pond where ducks and other birds gather in winter. The experience also changes with the seasons: the park offers different forest landscapes, while the pond invites visitors to watch birds in winter.
When planning your stay, you can start by deciding whether hiking, city history or both should be the main focus. For hikes, the stated circular route and stage distances provide practical guidance; starting points and bus connections are also given for some destinations. For cultural sites and churches, it is worth checking the visitor arrangements, especially the seasonal opening of Våmbs kyrka. This way, you can choose your activities and check relevant timetable or visitor information in advance.
