Discover Tidan through its local history and diverse cultural themes. Local highlights include a 19th-century farmstead, the history of the textile industry, and places connected with art, museums and technology. Nearby, a ship setting, a covered bridge and Lake Östen add to the picture. This offers clear themes to consider when planning your trip: local history, distinctive structures, nature and culture.

Local History from Prehistory to the Textile Industry

Vallby Sörgården in Tidan is a well-preserved 19th-century farmstead. In and around the Vallby Sörgården cultural reserve, you will find a runestone, road remains and several Iron Age graves. These traces point to the area having been used since prehistoric times. The farmstead and the older remains represent different periods in the history of Vallby Sörgården and its surroundings.

Historically, the Tidan River was an important source of energy for mills, power stations and the textile industry. The establishment of the wool factories is also part of the story of the town’s origins: it took place in 1910 and marked the beginning of Tidan. The river and the factory point to two distinct aspects of local history: the use of hydropower and the start of industrial development.

Art, Technology and Local Atmosphere

Centralföreningen in Tidan houses a crafts and gift shop, an art gallery and a museum. The museum also displays old light motorcycles. Its themes therefore range from art and crafts to the history of technology. Österbergs Konditori in Tidan preserves an atmosphere from the 1950s and offers a different point of interest in the town.

Bennys Trädgårdsjärnväg, a miniature garden railway in Tidan, is a visitor attraction in its own right. It is one of Sweden’s largest garden railways, with a scale of 2:22.5. This offers a distinctive focus alongside local and industrial history: here, the miniature garden railway itself takes centre stage.

Structures and Nature in the Surrounding Area

Near Tidan lies Askeberga skeppssättning, Sweden’s second-largest ship setting. Twenty-four block-shaped stones, about two metres high, are arranged in an oval measuring 55 metres long and 18 metres wide. Vaholms Brohus is also nearby: this covered bridge crosses the Tidan River and is probably the only bridge of its kind in Sweden.

Near Tidan, Lake Östen is a Ramsar wetland of international importance. The three destinations have distinctly different features: the stone oval is the main attraction at Askeberga, the covered bridge at Vaholms Brohus, and the wetland at Lake Östen. You can therefore include a range of cultural and nature-based themes in your travel plans.

Routes, Parks and Summer Music

Kulturväg Skaraborg ends in Tidan. This tourist route lets you explore historic places independently and enjoy impressive natural scenery; brown-and-white signs mark the route. Its endpoint in Tidan gives the route a direct connection to the town, while the route as a whole brings together cultural and nature-based themes.

Vävareparken in Tidan has a lit fitness trail with a newly resurfaced path. The park also features the redesigned historic manager’s garden, with additional plants. The fitness trail is focused on exercise, while the garden connects with Tidan’s industrial history.

In summer, Olstorps Festplats offers live music from current party bands and artists. A separate buggbana is intended for dancing in a folk-park setting; Club Veboá is an open-air disco at Olstorps Festplats in Tidan. If you are travelling for the live music, check the latest event dates in advance so you can plan your trip around them.
