Görväln Nature Reserve lies on the shores of Lake Mälaren. Its landscape includes coniferous and deciduous forests, rocky areas, and grazing and arable land; the reserve has numerous cycling and walking trails. In Järfälla, natural attractions sit alongside a long cultural history: a church and runestones, a historic inn, museums and cultural trails offer different themes to explore during a stay. When planning, you can choose among trails of different lengths, cultural and historical themes, and outdoor activities.

Cultural History and Historic Sites

Järfälla Church was built at the end of the 12th century. Two runestones stand beside the church. They indicate that the area was already significant during the Viking Age. Görväln Castle is a manor estate dating from the 17th century, with a surrounding park and an arboretum. Near the castle is the Görväln Sculpture Park: its artworks are permanently installed, the park is open year-round and admission is free.

At Barkarby Torg and Inn, the tradition of innkeeping and hospitality dates back to 1671; the red inn building has served guests for more than 350 years. The Barkarby Inn building, now the Lasse-Maja Inn, dates largely from the first half of the 18th century. Its oldest, low-set section probably dates from 1671. This allows the site’s tradition and the building’s history to be considered as two closely dated but distinct aspects.

Järfälla Local History Museum displays objects and pictures from Järfälla. They illustrate the development from an agricultural society into a modern residential area. The museum has another location at Skälby Farm, Skälby gårds väg 20. It is open, among other occasions, on café Sundays and on the day of the local community centre; check the dates before visiting. The Bolinder Museum presents the 100-year history of the Bolinder works. The Koffsan collection includes finds from the archaeological excavation of an inn on the island of Koffsan in Lake Mälaren. It is located in the library’s open lounge in Jakobsberg.

Cultural Trails and Routes

In the Barkarby–Skälby area, four cultural trails of different lengths link cultural and historical sites with traces of prehistoric times. The Veddesta Trail is 5.8 kilometres long and focuses on prehistory and the history of communications. The Kyrkby Trail is 2.2 kilometres long and passes several sites that have shaped Järfälla’s history. The 5.3-kilometre Barkarby Trail is a circular route through areas shaped by land subdivision, horticulture and the residential development of the 20th century.

Two other routes can also be distinguished by their length and character: the Görväln Trail is an 8-kilometre cultural walking trail that runs mostly through a natural area. The Sandvik Trail, also 8 kilometres long, is a walking route whose character is shaped by nature along the shores of Lake Mälaren. The routes’ lengths and the themes described can help guide your choice, but they should not be considered alike.

Nature and Outdoor Activities

Gåseborg is one of the best-preserved hillforts on Lake Mälaren. Gåsberget offers views across the lake. Västra Järvafältet Nature Reserve preserves a rural landscape with gravel roads and paths winding through the terrain. Facilities include picnic areas, barbecue facilities, toilets, swimming areas, ski slopes and birdwatching towers. A stream rich in fish flows through Norra Igelbäcken Nature Reserve and provides important habitat for many species. Hästa Klack Nature Reserve combines coniferous forest, open woodland edges and traces of an older cultural landscape.

The Görväln area in western Järfälla is designated under Chapter 3, Section 6 of the Swedish Environmental Code as an area of national interest for the conservation of the cultural landscape. The reasons are its manor estate landscape and its transport and communications environment, rooted in the medieval culture of large landowners. Older cultural landscapes have also been preserved at Ängsjö, Horsgärdet/Uddnäs and Ormbacka.

Bruket Outdoor Recreation Area offers activities across a range of distances and types: a 900-metre cross-country ski trail, a 300-metre alpine ski slope with a drag lift and a conveyor lift, and a 2.8-kilometre mountain bike trail with 68 metres of elevation gain. These details can help you choose an activity to suit your preferences, without implying a particular difficulty level.

Ängsjö Outdoor Recreation Area offers activities throughout the year, including fitness trails, an outdoor fitness area, a beach, canoes, a sauna and nature trails. There is also a nine-hole disc golf course; check its availability before travelling. Canoes and kayaks are rented out there during the summer season, and cross-country skates in winter. As these offerings are seasonal, it is advisable to check current availability. There are fishing waters in Lake Mälaren and Lake Översjön; check the applicable fishing regulations separately.

Plan Your Visit

You can reach Järfälla Church on foot, by bicycle, by commuter train on the Kungsängen/Bålsta line, or by bus to Barkarby station; from there, it is a short walk. Check the timetables for your journey. The digital cultural walks in Järfälla are 2 to 4 kilometres long, suitable for children and available with English text. They offer another way to explore cultural themes in a format of your choice.

The Järfälla Local History Association organises walks, cycling tours, bus tours, lectures and image presentations in various parts of Järfälla; the programme may vary. Annual events include Görväln Day on 6 June, which is held in conjunction with a celebration of Sweden’s National Day. It is the association’s largest annual event and is aimed at all age groups. Check the dates for the relevant year if you are planning your stay around it.
