Green Spaces and Waterways

If you’re considering Sundbyberg as a place to stay, you’ll find a range of themes to plan your days around: waterways and nature reserves, trails for exercise, and art and local cultural heritage. The Bällstaån flows through Sundbyberg and reaches Lake Mälaren after running through Bällstaviken and Ulvsundasjön. Along with Lötsjön, Bällstaviken and Ulvsundasjön are the area’s only larger open bodies of water. The watercourse and open water create different accents in the landscape.

Igelbäckens Nature Reserve was established in 2004 to protect Igelbäcken and preserve the surrounding landscape for outdoor recreation and nature experiences. The area has many paths, exercise trails and varied natural surroundings. A loop of about one kilometre is marked as a wheelchair-accessible route. Route details may change; check the current route before visiting.

At Rissne ängar Nature Reserve, open meadows meet wooded hills with pine trees more than 300 years old. The reserve is part of a larger green area stretching from Rissne to Råstasjön in Solna, offering walks through green spaces across Sundbyberg. The area also has playgrounds, a children’s pool, barbecue areas, a toboggan run and large open spaces. If you’re planning to use a particular facility, check its current status before visiting, as individual facilities may be undergoing maintenance or upgrades.

Lötsjön-Golfängarna Nature Reserve combines wooded areas and open lawns with a bird lake, a playground, a paddling pool and a ball court. Several walking and cycling paths cross the area. Play, exercise, relaxation and nature experiences are possible here year-round; the combination of open spaces and water sets this natural area apart from the meadows and wooded hills of Rissne.

Trails, Exercise and the Seasons

Ursviks motionsomrĂĄde has five different trail lengths and an activity trail for children. NickspĂĄret is a mountain bike trail about 12.5 kilometres long that can be divided into shorter sections. One description refers to a choice of trail lengths, while the other gives the approximate total length and divisibility of a specific route. This helps you distinguish between a selection of routes and a mountain bike ride with a stated length when planning.

The artificial-snow ski trail in Ursvik is two kilometres long; operation depends on winter conditions. If cross-country skiing is an important part of your travel plans, check conditions before visiting. For swimming and exercise, Sundbybergs simhall och gym has five swimming pools, a gym, group exercise classes, and a dry sauna and a steam sauna.

Art, History and Local Culture

At Marabouparken, landscape design and art come together. Landscape architect Sven Hermelin worked there from 1937 to 1955. When the park was planned, public access was a condition of Marabou’s purchase of the property. In 2008, the park was named Sweden’s most beautiful park. Marabouparken also has a sculpture collection featuring works by Swedish and international artists. Marabouparken konsthall is a venue for contemporary art, conversations and educational activities; individual exhibitions and programmes vary.

Duvbo’s cultural setting includes large gardens, its street network, parks, a church, a school, a fire station, lush vegetation and historic villas. Duvbo kyrka was inaugurated in 1904. Its façades are designed in a simple, freely interpreted Gothic Revival style.

Literature and local history are also among the topics to explore: Sundbyberg has 16 literary signs, each dedicated to an author associated with Sundbyberg. A museum tells the story of the area and displays works by local artists Carl Fagerberg, Carl Johan Dyfverman and Gustav Hyllengren.

A recurring event is National Day on 6 June: since 2005, it has been celebrated at Golfängarna as a large festival for all residents. If you’d like to plan your trip around this date, check the event announcement for the relevant year.
