Alby Nature Reserve lies beside Lake Albysjön, about three kilometres from the centre of Tyresö. The area combines swimming spots and recreational facilities with a varied landscape: deep valleys and substantial clay deposits alternate with ridges where moraine is found. Gnarled pines grow on exposed, nutrient-poor rock surfaces; oak trees and hazel bushes grow in some places.

Getting outdoors around Alby

The Alby recreation area beside Lake Albysjön has swimming spots, barbecue areas, walking trails, fitness loops and large lawns. There are trails for exercise as well as space for a range of outdoor activities. Alby Nature Reserve is accessible on foot and by bicycle. From the Nyfors bus stop, it is approximately 500 metres to the reserve.

The loop is 1.5 kilometres long in total and leads to a five-metre waterfall. For comparison, several pilgrim routes start at Stockholm Pilgrimscentrum in Tyresö and are just under three to 15 kilometres long. They are suitable for all age groups and are marked in the landscape in some places. The third stage of the Sörmlandsleden starts at the Alby recreation area or Alby Nature Reserve. From there, it passes through a hollow, across a bog with a cold spring, and continues over rocky surfaces to Tyresta National Park.

Castle Park, Museum and Water

Tyresö Castle and Park form a well-preserved cultural-historical setting of national interest. The main building of the castle houses a museum. It shows how the castle and estate’s last private owner lived around the turn of the 20th century. A visit to the castle can therefore be combined with a glimpse into the lifestyle of its owner at the time.

From the castle park, you can reach Notholmen via a bridge. The island has swimming spots, opportunities to fish from the rocks and picnic areas, as well as a café and a guest harbour. Café Notholmen serves light meals, coffee, cake and ice cream, with seating indoors and outdoors. At Klövberget, you can swim from the rocks and enjoy lovely views over Kalvfjärden. At Dyviks lövängar, you can go for a walk and swim at the rocky beach on Ällmorafjärden.

Cultural History in the Landscape

Ahlstorp båtsmanstorp lies within a nature reserve and along the Sörmlandsleden. This well-preserved cultural-historical setting includes a small red dwelling, outbuildings and a meadow. The ensemble is a typical crofter’s farmstead, or torp. Uddby kvarn och kraftverk represents another chapter in the area’s history: this industrial heritage site contains remains of various former activities and includes a functioning power plant.

Agriculture also shapes the landscape. Uddby gård is the municipality of Tyresö’s showcase farm. Various animals live there and help keep the landscape open. Nature and cultural history meet here in different forms: as agricultural land use, a preserved torp and a record of earlier industry.

Nature Reserves and Archipelago Landscape

Sandholmarna Nature Reserve includes a mainland area, the islands of Stora Sandholmen and Lilla Sandholmen, and part of Erstaviken. Together, these areas form a relatively unspoiled archipelago landscape in the Stockholm archipelago. On the Brevik Peninsula, the defining features of its nature reserve include rocky pine forest, a fault scarp with broadleaf woodland, and a cave system.

The forests of Tyresta have retained their primeval character. They are home to trees of different ages and species, as well as a particularly diverse range of mosses, lichens and fungi. Tyresta National Park and Tyresta Nature Reserve are accessible from Tyresö. There are several entrances to the national park within Tyresö. Tyresta Nature Reserve has a stroller-friendly trail, a barbecue area, a rest shelter and a café. The facilities also include Nationalparkernas hus, with exhibitions and guided tours.

There are six self-guided walks for exploring nature in Tyresö. Accompanying booklets cover areas accessible by wheelchair or rollator. You can explore a range of landscapes, trails and historic places, depending on your interests.
