Värmdö’s thousands of islands make up a large part of the Stockholm archipelago. The sea and an ancient cultural landscape shape the municipality’s natural environment; at the same time, trails pass through protected areas, and museums and exhibition venues tell stories of art and industrial history. When looking for a hotel, you can already consider which side of the island you’d like to explore on your trip.

Archipelago Landscapes and Nature Experiences

Värmdö has 44 nature reserves and one national park. In Nämdöskärgården National Park, visitors can hike among cliffs and beaches in peaceful coastal landscapes and observe the birdlife between the islands. Bullerö is home to the entrance to the national park, information boards, a small exhibition, and other visitor services. Facilities there include a campsite, a year-round warming hut, a public wood-fired sauna, barbecue areas, walking loops, and several natural harbours.

Trails near Gustavsberg also lead right into the landscape. Ösbyträsk Nature Reserve lies east of the centre and surrounds the three-part Ösbyträsk lake. The 4.5-kilometre Ösbyrundan trail runs around the lake; a section near the bathing area is adapted for accessibility. Beavers have settled along the shore. In some places, you can see trees gnawed and felled by beavers. If you’re looking for a longer loop, you’ll find Hälsans stig in the northern part of Gustavsberg: the marked trail is about six kilometres long and can be walked year-round. In comparison, Ösbyrundan is shorter, but the trails pass through different parts of Gustavsberg.

At about 25 kilometres long and divided into three stages, Värmdöleden is a longer hiking option. Much of the route passes through scenic areas of cultural and historical interest. For a different view of the coast, Artipelag has a roughly one-kilometre-long waterside walkway through the forest, over cliffs, and along open water. It is also suitable for wheelchair users and families with strollers. The trails therefore differ both in length and in what they bring into focus along the way.

Art and History in Gustavsberg

The Gustavsberg Collection comprises more than 45,000 objects, a selection of which is on display at the Gustavsberg Porcelain Museum. The pieces were made at the Gustavsberg factory between 1825 and 1993. They include studio ceramics and showpiece vases, as well as everyday tableware and sanitary ceramics. Art and design in enamel and plastic are also represented. The range makes a visit worthwhile if you’d like to discover not just individual porcelain pieces, but different aspects of the factory’s production.

Fotoparken adds to the cultural offering with a permanent open-air exhibition of contemporary photography; individual displays change. Värmdö kulturhus is housed in the former household porcelain factory in Gustavsberg and offers programmes and activities for a range of ages and interests. At the 26-square-metre exhibition room Galleri i, artists, craftspeople, associations, and schools can exhibit their work.

Artipelag also combines art with a striking waterside building. The building covers 3,000 square metres; the main entrance hall is more than 1,000 square metres. A 65-metre-long wall offers views of Baggensfjärden. At Artipelag Restaurant, dishes are freshly prepared using seasonal and locally sourced ingredients inspired by the surrounding natural environment. Food offerings may change.

More Cultural Sites and Practical Information

Skärgårdsmuseet Stavsnäs has permanent exhibitions and special exhibitions that change each year. The permanent exhibition includes 16 listening stations marked with QR codes; part of the display is equipped with audio stations. Fredriksborg Fortress is open to visitors, who can learn about its history on guided tours. The fortress was ready for use in 1733; it was intended to defend the narrow Oxdjupet passage outside Vaxholm. Check tour times before your visit.

For planning trips between attractions, here’s a useful guide: most destinations in the municipal Värmdö guide can be reached by bus or scheduled boat service. Check the timetables for your specific journey. Värmdö also has more than 180 small-boat harbours, guest harbours, and club-owned islands; individual harbour services may change. When looking for a hotel, you can weigh your priorities against one another: trails and coastal landscapes, the exhibitions in Gustavsberg, or a visit to Stavsnäs and Fredriksborg, for example.
