Möja: Hiking Trails and Archipelago Culture
Accommodation in Möja
Möja combines nature trails through the archipelago landscape with a vibrant island and cultural life. When planning your stay, it is worth keeping the different trails, places and seasonal offerings in mind: the Stockholm Archipelago Trail and the nature trail through Björndalen offer different experiences from the church, museums and dance pavilion.
Hiking between villages and the nature reserve
The Möja section of the Stockholm Archipelago Trail runs from Långvik to Hamn along a gravel road. Connections with the Waxholmsbåten make it possible to hike this section as a linear route rather than a loop. The places mentioned and the option to follow a linear route give your hike a clear direction, without requiring every outing to follow the same format.
A nature trail runs between Hamn in the west and Ramsmora in the east, through the Björndalen Nature Reserve. The distance between Hamn and Ramsmora is 12 kilometres. The protected area includes old-growth forest that has been left undisturbed, marshland and rocky areas. There are also mushroom excursions and long walks along the shore. The nature reserve can be reached by archipelago boat as far as the Dragedet jetty.
Möja thus offers a range of nature experiences: a hike along a gravel road, a trail through Björndalen and long walks by the shore. The island also has natural bathing spots among rocks and on beaches. There is no official bathing site, so natural bathing spots are not the same as designated bathing facilities.
Church, museums and Möja’s dance pavilion
Möja Church was built in 1768 by master builder Carl Örn. A votive ship hangs in its chancel. The church can be reached by boat from Sollenkroka, Boda or Strömkajen. Its history and furnishings give the visit a distinct cultural focus alongside the trails through the island’s natural landscape.
Möja’s dance pavilion is the oldest still-operating dance pavilion in the Stockholm archipelago. It hosts music events, dances, cinema screenings and markets every year; specific dates vary from year to year. Visitors can also use the three boules courts, provided they are not needed by club members at the time. When planning around events or boules, this condition is just as important as checking the dates for that year.
Festivals also shape island life. Midsummer celebrations are held in the meadows in the villages of Löka and Ramsmora, and everyone is welcome to join; dates vary each year. Sweden’s National Day is celebrated at Möja’s dance pavilion with a boule festival, picnic, music and other festivities. Check in advance which dates fall within your travel period.
Möja’s local history museum in Berg displays historic objects from the archipelago. Its cottages stand on a south-facing rise overlooking the sea and bare rock surfaces. Opening periods may vary by season. The Roland Svensson Museum at the Ramsmora jetty displays the artist’s former studio and several of his works; its opening hours may also be seasonal.
Island amenities and seasonal planning
Berg has a grocery store, a summer bakery, summer restaurants, a tourist office and a steamboat jetty. Since some of these services are seasonal, your travel dates are relevant when planning. The guest harbour in Berg has a toilet and water; these facilities are not available in winter. The Municipality of Värmdö also provides leaflets about Möja in English and Swedish, with information on accommodation, food, attractions and how to get there.
If you want to explore Möja by bike, you’ll find bike rental shops in the north and south of the island. Availability depends on the season. Kayaks, rowboats and SUPs are also available to rent seasonally. Other offerings include seal safaris and sauna trips to an island; their availability also depends on the season. These options complement walking trails with a variety of activities on the water, but not all offerings should be assumed to be available year-round.
The village of Ramsmora is home to Wikströms Fisk, a restaurant run by the archipelago’s only professional fisherman. The restaurant may operate seasonally. Together with its hiking trails, cultural sites and festivals, this makes Möja a varied destination: you can focus your trip on nature, island history or events, and check which seasonal offerings are available during your travel period.
