Boo between nature trails and cultural history
Accommodation in Boo
In Boo, trails through forest and rocky terrain meet historical walks and cultural sites by the water. The Booleden runs for about 15 kilometres from Boo hembygdsgÄrd in Orminge to Strömmen farm on the border with VÀrmdö, where it joins the VÀrmdöleden. Along the way are lakes, viewpoints, prehistoric monuments and sites of cultural and historical interest. The route passes through forests and over rocky terrain, by small forest lakes and across meadows.
Hiking trails and nature in Boo
Individual natural areas also each have their own character. In the RensÀttra Nature Reserve, old pines grow on rocky terrain; the trees are over 150 years old and some are up to 250 years old. An Iron Age burial ground suggests that RensÀttra was already inhabited in the 9th century. The area is within walking distance of the bus stops at Boo kyrka and Myrsjöskolan.
The 2.7-kilometre Lila slingan in the RensÀttra Nature Reserve passes through varied landscapes: meadows, horse paddocks and bodies of water, as well as allotment gardens, spruce forest and rocky terrain. Swimming is possible on the shore of SÄgsjön. There is also a small climbing crag in the western part of the reserve, with protection points fixed into the rock.
Himlaberg is 70.4 metres high and offers views across forest and sea from Vaxholm to Tyresö. In Velamsund, in eastern Boo on the border with VÀrmdö Municipality, Velamsunds gÄrd lies in a steep rift valley between Insjön and Velamsundsviken. For walks, there is the approximately two-kilometre Snigelstigen, with a quiz about the area's nature and culture. Other routes include a lit 2.5-kilometre running track, the green four-kilometre route and the red six-kilometre loop.
Velamsund and its trails
The easily accessible gravel paths in Velamsund are suitable for walking or for wheelchair users. However, they are not laid out as circular routes. At the lower end of Rudsjön, on the eastern side of the lake, a birdwatching tower and an accessible viewing platform offer good views across the entire wetland and alder swamp forest. The options in the area therefore vary: from routes with stated lengths to gravel paths that do not form a loop.
Cultural walks and Booâs history
A cultural and historical walk in Boo can be explored independently using marked stops and maps. It is about two kilometres long and includes some uphill sections that can be challenging, for example, for people using a rollator. The walk covers the Russian ravages, Boo gÄrd, the return of the plague and the Battle of StÀket.
The cultural walk around Boo gĂ„rd and BaggensstĂ€ket is 4.5 kilometres long. It passes interesting buildings, parkland, Iron Age burial grounds and remnants of the areaâs defence history. For this walk, visitors are currently advised to avoid the section of shore at Gammeludden and follow the signs for Lugna promenaden instead. Check the current advice for the route before setting out.
As of June 2026, the BaggensstÀket Cultural Reserve had been established; boundary markers and information boards were still planned at that time. The reserve is intended to preserve and develop, among other things, old pine forests on rocky terrain, coniferous forests rich in broadleaf trees, broadleaf groves and shoreline areas. The reserve is intended to protect and provide access to valuable cultural landscapes and biodiversity.
Churches, a chapel and a waterway
Boo kyrka combines distinctive interior design with a wide range of uses: baptisms, weddings, services and funerals are held there. People also gather for pilgrimages, confirmation and devotions, or have quiet conversations at the graves of their loved ones. The interior is inspired by early Christian Italian architecture and Romanesque basilicas. Its features include a series of stained-glass windows depicting the Passion, as well as wall and vault paintings by Olle Hjortzberg.
The old Boo kapell, dating from the 18th century, lies above the outlet from StÀket into BaggensfjÀrden and belongs to Boo herrgÄrd. During the summer season, the chapel can be hired for baptisms or weddings; it has room for 75 guests. Several musical evenings are held there in summer. Today, the BaggensstÀket waterway is used more for recreational boating and excursions, having lost its former importance as a commercial transport route.
