Hanaskog combines a rich local history with opportunities for walks and seasonal leisure activities. When planning a hotel stay, it helps to distinguish between these themes: Hanaskog Manor with its architecture, the historic lime works and Kviinge Church represent different periods of history. Kviinge backe is an important local spot for walks and recreation; Hanaskogsbadet adds to the picture as an outdoor swimming pool that opens seasonally. Before your trip, you can consider whether cultural history or outdoor activities should play a greater role in your stay.

Manor House, Park and Landscape

The main building of Hanaskog Manor is a two-storey red-brick building constructed in 1852–1854. The architect H J Strömberg designed it in a style typical of the period, inspired by the Middle Ages. The stylistic description should be distinguished from the construction date: “inspired by the Middle Ages” describes the design, while the building itself dates from the 19th century. The manor park was laid out in the first half of the 19th century, making it older than the main building. The manor lies in a landscape of broad fields and straight roads lined with avenues of trees. Next to the manor is Hanaskogs bete, a large, open pasture. The broad fields and straight, tree-lined roads offer a different scale from the two-storey main building: a description of the manor encompasses both a specific building and open landscape.

Earlier Historical Periods

Hanaholm was the fortified predecessor of Hanaskog Manor. It stood on three islands in the Helge å, northeast of present-day Hanaskog. Kviinge Church in Hanaskog is a Romanesque church dating from the 12th to 13th centuries. It therefore belongs to a much earlier period than the manor’s main building, which dates from the 1850s. Hanaholm broadens the historical perspective by adding the manor’s fortified past.

Industrial History of the Lime Works

The historic lime works includes two surviving lime kilns: one dates from 1873 and the other from 1929. There are 56 years between their dates. Both are gas-fired kilns that replaced older ring kilns. The switch to gas firing is therefore part of the lime works’ history, as are the different dates of the surviving kilns. The lime works ceased operating in the early 1960s. The two structures and the history of the operation add an industrial period to the site’s history alongside the manor’s architectural history.
