Östra Göinge between Forest, Lake and History
Accommodation in Östra Göinge
Östra Göinge changes character from north to south: in the north, the southern Swedish highlands continue with their hilly, forested landscape. In places, flatter areas of marshland lie in between; in the south, the landscape opens up into farmland. Lake Immeln is the largest lake in Östra Göinge, while the Helge å flows through the municipality from north to south and meets the Almaån northeast of Kviinge. Forest, water and open landscapes offer a variety of themes for your outings.
Hiking: A Stage or a Multi-Day Route
The Kust till kust section of the Skåneleden Trail runs through Östra Göinge. The Immeln–Sibbhult stage is particularly easy to identify: it is 14 kilometres long, rated moderate and marked in blue. The Snapphaneleden offers a different kind of route. It connects the Skåneleden sections SL1 (Kust till kust) and SL6 (Vattenriket), running from a well in Arkelstorp via Immeln to Sibbhult. The circular route between Immeln and Breanäs is designed as a two- or three-day trip and combines hiking with paddling. This lets you compare a single stage, described by length and difficulty, with a multi-day combination of different activities. There are wind shelters and rest areas along the Skåneleden stages.
At Lake Immeln: Paddling, Swimming and Fishing
Lake Immeln is considered a classic paddling destination; islands and wooded coves shape the scenery on the water. The lake also has a child-friendly swimming spot in a natural setting, as well as a kiosk, food and drink options and a campsite. Along a 26-kilometre stretch from Nöbbelövs kraftstation to Genastorps dammluckor, there are seven well-signposted fishing spots. The stretch also includes the lower reaches of Baggabäcken, Kilingeån and Njura kanal.
There are four purpose-built cycling circuits, suitable for both families and experienced cyclists. Another cycling tour follows in the footsteps of the Snapphanar, sharing their history and passing through the tranquillity of the forest. As well as hiking and paddling routes, there are therefore different ways to explore the area on two wheels.
History and Architecture
Sporrakulla gård, near Sibbhult, is associated with the history of the Snapphanar and the 17th century. During this period, the Snapphanar and the soldiers who fought on the Danish side were active in the area. Broby hembygdspark offers a different glimpse into earlier ways of life and is considered the largest open-air museum in Skåne. Its 18 historic buildings illustrate various architectural styles from the 18th and 19th centuries.
The church in Knislinge was built in the early 13th century and is known for its medieval wall paintings. Frännarp’s rock carving, Urstenen, dates back even further: it is estimated to be more than 3,000 years old. It depicts numerous horse-drawn wagons and is considered Sweden’s most extensive representation of wagon motifs. In Immeln, the Stone Museum shows how stone was quarried and which tools were used. Sibbhult also has two attractions of its own: an open-air stone museum and the Lapidarium, a museum of gravestones.
Weaving, Art and Events
The Svenska VävstolsMuseet in Glimåkra has a permanent display of looms and tools. Its textile exhibitions include activities and talks; the museum also holds eight to ten craft and traditional arts courses each year, with a focus on hand weaving. Wanås Konst’s year-round programme includes guided tours, workshops, open studio activities and other art programmes for all ages. There, you can listen to the artist’s voice and follow a trail through the sculpture park.
Farm shops are also part of the local offering; individual businesses may change. Östra Göinge’s events calendar lists informational, entertainment and leisure events that are open to all visitors. If you are planning a specific date, check the current listings. There is a bus stop in Sibbhult; if it is important for your journey, check the timetable in advance.
