Kögenäs is a village by Lake Stora Rängen. Several distinct themes come together here for travelers: the preserved houses of five farms in the village center, the soldier’s croft Högåsa, and the biography of Jonas Petri Kjörling. The village is also connected to the lake and to hiking trails in the wider region. If you are looking for a hotel for a trip to Kögenäs, these themes can help you decide what to focus on during your stay: local history, a historical figure, or hiking in the region.

Farmhouses and Högåsa

The houses of five farms survived the land consolidation in the village center. This is on a different scale from Högåsa, which centers on a single soldier’s croft that a historical local account describes as carefully restored and maintained. This makes it possible to consider the local history of the preserved buildings of several farms separately from the history of a single croft.

A village walk on May 27 went from the soldier’s croft Högåsa to the village center of Kögenäs; about 40 people took part. The route started at Högåsa and ended in the village center, making the connection between the individual croft and the village center tangible through a past local event. The approximate number of participants gives a concrete sense of the event’s scale.

A biography from Kögenäs

Jonas Petri Kjörling adds a biography to the local history. He was born in the village of Kögenäs in 1630. In 1653, he became a student of Östgöta Nation at Uppsala University; later, he became a professor in Dorpat. This sequence highlights three distinct stages: Kögenäs was his birthplace, Uppsala his student years, and Dorpat the location of his later professorship. Thus, alongside the village’s architectural history, a personal chronology also comes into view.

The lake and hiking trails

Stora Rängen provides the geographical setting for the village and is also the scene of a historical winter episode. Members of Linköpings Flygklubb (LFK) were able to land on the lake’s ice near Kögenäs in two past winters. This winter activity differs from the architectural and biographical traces: here, the lake itself is the focus. It presents a different perspective from Rängen Runt: there, the lake is the point of reference for the circular route, while the landings took place on the ice.

In the wider region around Kögenäs, the 45-kilometer Rängen Runt hiking route circles Lake Stora Rängen. The Östgötaleden section between Sätravallen and Vårdnäs, by contrast, is distinguished by its terrain: it runs mostly along gravel roads, partly along trails, and for a small part on asphalt. These offer different points of reference for planning: Rängen Runt is defined by its length and circular route, while the Östgötaleden section is characterized by the distribution of its surface types. Its geographical scale also differs from that of the earlier village walk: that walk went from Högåsa to the village center, whereas Rängen Runt and the section mentioned belong to the wider region.
