Linköping offers different ways to explore the city’s history and culture: an open-air museum, museums covering art and cultural history, and self-guided walks. There are also parks to visit and trails along canals and through oak landscapes. When planning, you can decide whether to focus on historic sites, aviation, a city walk or nature.

Museums and City History

At the Gamla Linköping open-air museum, visitors can experience the city, countryside and forest as they were a hundred years ago. This historical reconstruction offers a different way to engage with the past than an exhibition or a walk through the city. Östergötlands Museum in Linköping presents exhibitions on art and cultural history and also includes an interactive environment for families with children.

Swedish aviation history across several eras is the focus of the Flygvapenmuseum. Visitors can try out a flight simulator there. The museum also includes Flyglabbet, an interactive science centre for children, where they can try flight simulators, build virtual aircraft and explore jet engines. The activities combine the history of aviation with opportunities to try things out and explore.

Linköping Cathedral and the castle also offer an opportunity to explore the city’s history. After Uppsala Cathedral, the cathedral is Sweden’s second-largest and best-preserved medieval church building. The Linköping Castle and Cathedral Museum is located in the castle opposite the cathedral and presents the history of both buildings. S:t Lars Church is also in the city centre; a carillon rings from its tower five times a day.

Discover the City’s History on Foot

The historic walking trails let you discover significant events in the city’s history in the city centre and at your own pace. In addition, Östergötlands Museum offers four digital city tours that let you explore Linköping’s history independently. Both options are suitable for exploring at your own pace; the difference is the format you choose: historic trails on foot or a digital tour from the museum.

For a walk with other activities, centrally located Trädgårdsföreningen is an option. The park is ideal for guided walks, picnics, games and fika; you can also buy plants there, and there are places to eat. Trädgårdsföreningen is home to Belvederen, an observation tower and café with views across Linköping. The park thus combines walking paths and a variety of offerings in one place.

Walking Trails and Natural Areas

Linköping’s walking trails range from short and longer routes to trails close to the city. They include trails along the Kinda Canal and Göta Canal, as well as through an impressive oak landscape. The Reitweg trail passes through several nature reserves. These varied landscapes make it easier to choose an outing based on your preferred trail theme and distance, without reducing all routes to a single type of setting.

Tinnerö is the most central part of the natural area and lies about two kilometres from Stora torget. The historic city centre, park paths and walking trails through different landscapes offer different ways to explore Linköping on foot. If you want to combine culture and exercise, you can pair a walk exploring the city’s history with a visit to a park or a trail through the countryside.
